Thanks, everyone, for all the great ideas. My trip is sure to be a success with all these new things to do!
I like all the suggestions here! I was at Versailles in 1997, so this trip next month will be to Fontainebleau.

Thanks Vincent for the clarification. I figured correctly. I just didn't think it was a place to "tour" in addition to the Cathedral.

I plan to go back to Pere Lachaise cemetery. It was very interesting. There was even a black cat, which made the place eerie, but I couldn't get him to sit still long enough for me to take a picture.

And I saw Ronin the other night! That first scene of Arles was awesome! My original plans included Arles, but not now... :(
Amy,

So many good answers already! A couple of more ideas...the Cluny Museum is great, built over roman ruins...the Arene de Lutece is a real roman arena tucked into a residentional area of the left bank....I did a walking tour of Village St Paul in the Marais, nice old buldings, narrow streets, antique shops....try the "africain" hot chocolate at Angelina's on Rue Rivoli, wow...walk along the Seine, both up top and down below...have a picnic in Jardins de Luxembourg....City Hall in the Marais is nice place to hang out, fountains...along the Left bank, east of Place St Michel are many good restaurants, some with outdoor patios with views of the Seine and Notre Dame....go to Place Trocadero at night and get a fantastic view of the Eiffel tower all lit up....Place D'Alma for the Lady Di memorial....even though it is a little "hokey", a night cruise on the Seine is fantastic to see the buldings and bridges all lit up, there are also dinner cruises...check out the jewellery shops across from the Ritz, very high end stuff...walk along Faubourg St Honore to see latest fashions...check out gardens at foot of Champs Elysee....sit by pool in Tuileries Gardens......visit Opera Garnier...go to Fauchon's for some terrific foods....have a Berthillon ice cream on Ile St Louis, while checking out the neat shops and restaurants....

Hope this helps,

Enjoy!

To follow up on Grégoire's post : yes, he is right about Victor Hugo's house : it's place des Vosges and not in the 16th. And this department store on the Right Bank end of Pont-Neuf is La Samaritaine. Speaking of Pont-Neuf, what's actually nice is to go around every "place royale" in Paris. From Henri IV on, every king had his own square built ; so it's a nice way to follow France's history : place Dauphine for Henri IV, place des Vosges for Louis XIII, place des Victoires (the smartest of all) for Louis XIV, place de la Concorde for Louis XV, place Vendôme for Louis XVI, then they had some problems with their head and they stopped !
