The Storr, Skye
On Skye you should make an effort to visit and possibly walk up to the Old Man Of Storr.

My girls and I hiked to the Old Man in 2013 too! Actually, I'm the only one who made it all the way. One pooped out and the other got to the base and her fear of heights got to her. You had a MUCH clearer day than we did! My friend has bad knees so that hike is out, but fingers crossed the weather is that clear for us so she can see it at least.

Hey there Fodorites- I'm back for more advice! We've got our stays in Scotland planned and reserved. Now I just need help with one of the routes.

Here's the full itinerary:
Sep 13-16 Edinburgh (14 Hart St per many recommendations here)
Sep 16 get car at airport, drive to Callander- see Inchmahome Priory and poss Doune Castle
Sep 17-19 Portree, Isle of Skye
Sep 20-22 Fionnphort, Isle of Mull (btw- janisj we moved our dates around just so we could stay at Seaview!)
Sep 23- Glasgow- fly to LHR morning of Sep 24

I've done the Callander to Skye drive before, but via Mallaig on the ferry. This time, I think we'll take the bridge so we can see Eilean Donan. We won't necessarily do the tour, but I missed seeing it last time. The route I am unsure of is Portree to Fionnphort. To prevent back-tracking through Fort William, we could go through Morar and take the ferry from Lochaline to Fishnish, or take the B8077 to Kilchoan and take the ferry to Tobermory. But that does mean taking 2 ferries. I don't want to be held "hostage" by ferry reservations and time tables if I can help it. Especially on these SLOW roads. Are reservations a must in late Sep. or can we just turn up?

When we leave Mull for Glasgow, we'll be going through Kilmartin so that route is pretty obvious.

I'm open to ideas and suggestions :)

Thanks janisj. Do you think we need reservations for these ferries? I'd rather not be tied down to a specific time.

I'd reserve the Armadale to Mallaig ferry if you have to be on a specific sailing. But this will be a thursday in late-ish Sept so that likely isn't necessary. I've been on the Fishnish ferry 3 times (twice in one direction and once in the other) and never pre-booked - And one of those was in early september.

However -- Calmac is good about putting you on an earlier or later ferry than your booking and there are no change fees. So if you want to book for 'insurance' and show up early or late you can usually board.
