Two Days in Salzburg. What to Do?
 

Hello!

My fiancé and I will be spending two days in Salzburg in the fall. I am thinking of do the following while we are there; any other suggestions or feedback would be much appreciated.

Hallein and Dürrnberg Salt Mines
Eagle's Nest
Salzburg Fortress
Town center/square/plaza
Mozart's Birthplace
Mirabell Gardens

Also, a friend of mine mentioned that he did an organized tour that included the salt mines and the Bavarian Alps. I normally like to explore on my own, but this tour looks kind of interesting. Has anyone else done something similar? Any recommendations?

Have been to Salzburg before as a day trip from Vienna. Will definitely second seeing the Fortress, Mozart's Birthplace, and the Mirabell Gardens. Walking the historic center of town is great -- especially include a stroll down the Getreidegasse, the street where Mozart's Birthplace is.

Also enjoyed seeing the Dom (cathedral) and its small allied museum. The Residenz is supposed to be well worth a visit, but didn't get a chance to go in. The Mozart Wohnhaus (where the composer lived for the short time when he returned to Salzburg trying to make it on his own there briefly) is also available to visit, though I remember it being more of a "cool, Mozart lived here" spot rather than something that a non-music lover might get a lot out of.

We are just back from a brief 2 night stay in Salzburg, the 6th visit to this city and the shortest. We have never run out of things to do and hope to stay for a week next visit.

If you have 2 full days I would devote one to the beautiful Salzkammergut rather than the Salt Mines and Eagles Nest. The mines IMO are kind of hokey and unless you have kids, I would not bother. Eagles Nest is interesting but I prefer a day spent visiting St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang, which includes a very scenic boat ride.

This trip we visited Bad Ischl, 1:40 minutes by bus from Salzburg, and it was spectacular!

If you devote one day to Salzburg, you can easily visit the Fortress, Mirabell Gardens, and the town center. You could also include a visit to Hellbrunn, a 20 minute bus ride away.

Have fun - Salzburg is really a delight!

We are going to the Salzburg area in June for 3 nights. Is it best to stay in Salzburg and go to St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang and Bad Ischl as day trips or is it possible to stay in St. Gilgen or another pretty area and do Salzburg as a day trip. We will have a car. Also any hotels or B&Bs to recommend.

I'm not sure this would work for your itinerary, but we really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Burgblick, virtually on the Salzach River across from Burghausen. It is a 45-min. drive to Salzburg from there. But we LOVED having a room with huge windows looking across the river to the village of Burghausen with the castle on the hill. So charming! And we just walked across the bridge into Old Town in the evenings. The breakfast buffet was wonderful, service was understated and good. I think the hotel is listed as being in Ach, Austria.

lilley, we prefer a small city so Salzburg works well as a base for us. We enjoy St. Gilgen but not sure we would want to spend a few days there. Bad Ischl was larger with more to do and we would be happy with a night or two in this area.

We do not rent a car so our priorities are different as we rely on public transport which is excellent but not the same convenience factor as driving yourself. Salzburg proper with a car might pose a challenge in terms of parking.
