Trivia Challenge #3

What world-famous site is always moving backward? Hint: it is not in Europe.

Maira Jul 11th, 1999 01:24 PM

Is it related to a river?

Dave Jul 11th, 1999 01:28 PM

Niagara Falls? (Or Yosimite Falls, Stanley Falls and any other falls for that matter!)

Al Jul 11th, 1999 03:59 PM

Dave wins...because the lip of any waterfall is always eroding upstream.

Dave Jul 11th, 1999 06:22 PM

Wow, all those years of college finally pay off! So do I win a free trip to the waterfall of my choice?

Here's a bonus question: Why is the erosion at Niagara Falls significantly reduced at night?

Dave Jul 11th, 1999 07:48 PM

PS: Finally thought of a way to tie this back to the Europe forum!!

The answer to my bonus question above is related to the reason why my day-tour guide referred to Ben Cruachan, Scotland as the "Hollow Mountain"

Sheila Jul 12th, 1999 01:05 AM
I don't know the answer to the Niagara question,(this _is_ the Europe forum after all!!!) but I guess it's something to do with dams or electricity generation, since the reason Ben Cruachan is the Hollow Mountain is because it houses a Hydro elelctric plant inside it

Dave Jul 12th, 1999 04:24 AM

That's right. About half (perhaps more) of the Niagara River is diverted at night to supply hydroelectric power. And Ben Cruachan is used as a pumped-storage hydro plant.
