So would it be a United flight then and not Lufthansa? I was looking at reviews of Lufthansa and they weren't very good :(

Yes. Airlines allow one another (sometimes) to sell tickets on each other's planes, called "code-sharing." The United-operated flight between Newark and Edinburgh may carry a Lufthansa flight number as well as its own United flight number, but in every other respect - where you check in, etc. - it will be a United flight. Sometimes the "codeshare" airline can sell tickets a little cheaper than the operating airline, but this is due to the bizarre nature of ticket pricing and shouldn't be taken as anything more. United's EWR-EDI flight is operated with a narrow-body 757, so not the most comfortable plane in the sky in coach (dandy in business class) but eastbound it's a very quick flight, aided (usually) by strong tailwinds. Getting through border controls at EDI is a snap compared to Heathrow. |
You may want to look at flights into Glasgow rather than Edinburgh; I have been researching flights for a trip later this year and found Dulles into Glasgow on Icelandair a bit cheaper - just watch the layover times - some are long, some are not.

Thank you so much! All of your wisdom is really helping out. I did get in contact with Guthrie castle, hoping we could stay a night there, but they only do events there now. :( Hoping we can still go and visit it though.

Guthrie Castle is in the middle of an region w/ a lot to see. Within a short or reasonable drive are • St Andrews/Fife • Glamis Castle • Dunnottar Castle/Stonehaven • Crathes Castle • J.M. Barrie's birthplace • and more
If you could arrange a visit to the castle you could spend a couple more days seeing other sites in the area |
