This is my favorite part of Italy. Such beautiful photos.
|
Love your trip reports, Adelaidean! Have read many of them and took note of tips, logistic information, comments on accommodation, food, etc. But what I enjoy most are the beautiful pictures you take. Gorgeous!! You have such a good eye to spot them, get the right angle and frame!
Now, I’m dreaming about my first trip to the Dolomites this September. Got a lot of inspiration from your TRs. We (DH & I) are going to visit Bressanone and Ortisei. But got very impressed with what you are seeing in Corvara. I also love mountains, forests, small villages, flowers and hikes. So, if you would compare Ortisei with Corvara, do you have a favorite or any comments? 😊 |
Superb photos! Sadly I have never been to this part of Italy and probably never will but I am enjoying "visiting" through the photos!

It’s fairly common to order half board here, ie breakfast and dinner, here’s a daily menu example :
A salad and appetiser buffet, then choice of 3 first, and 3 second courses. Plus dessert. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5af3bbda13.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4c49348481.jpg I tend to pick the basics, but in addition there may be sushi, or pasta, or fish; etc. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8cc36b7696.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d4ab2c7535.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f5ea29e3a9.jpg |
Day 32 : Corvara, Italy
Quite hot 30C and we were not looking to do long walks, so did some chairlift/ cable car hopping today. Up Col Alto cablecar, walk to chairlifts, over to Piz Sorega down to San Cassiano village, return, then gondola to La Ila/La Villa/ Stern village and bus home to Corvara. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...80ac0249a.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4bfbb5a74.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...02cb3e2a8.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9b42e5ca9.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9890fc112.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7fdc9dc93.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0f62b6c01.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b83f4ff55.jpegLots of bikers here, bike trails look fantastic and easy to transport on chairlifts. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8f909224b.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ab2f96492.jpeg |
Hmmm, leifields, Corvara vs Ortisei:
we chose Ortisei on our first trip to the Dolomites and it worked well for us, I liked that it had 3 cablecar options direct from town, and the bus connections were good, lots of great restaurants, seemed to attract a lot of English speaking tourists. Really busy, but we were there in mid summer peak season. I chose San Candido next time, it was quieter, more European tourists, but we went in September. Corvara is lovely, really a busy thoroughfare and lots of roadworks going on, but efficiently managed and excellent bus service. Great food, great access to cablecars. Lots of European tourists also. But, everyone speaks good English, and all the TI’s have been really helpful. I don’t know if any of that helps, the decision making is hard when it’s all so lovely. Do check the cablecar closing times, though, for whichever you choose. |
Also, familiarise yourself with the App - I didn’t buy tickets via the App, but referred to it for timetabling, cost of journey so as to have correct change for driver, finding bus stops, but also being aware of the different names of the villages…

Beautiful pictures, meals look outstanding! I had the halfboard at Hotel Rose in Niederdorf/Villabassa and they offered along with your selections, an exceptional salad bar! Best food I had in Italy!
Liefields, don't forget the Val Gardena Card when you go to Ortisei. Covers all the lifts in Val Gardena! Well worth the costs of

That APP looks great!

Adelaidean, thanks for your response and comments! Yes, I know… it is hard to choose because everywhere is so beautiful there. But I will keep Ortisei. And I did check the cable car closing times last year when I booked the hotel and put our days in Ortisei in the beginning of our trip. I downloaded the Sud Tirol Mobil App yesterday and started getting familiar to it. I checked how far Corvara is from Ortisei by bus and it looks like is 1.5 to 2h - 2 buses.
Thanks for taking the time in sharing your knowledge and stunning photos in all those fabulous trips! Stormbird1: thanks for your tip! |
I'd be in trouble with those second courses...maybe they'd let me order two first courses instead?:)
Still enjoying your report Adelaidean. We're headed to the Dolomites in December and after exhaustive research decided on San Candido and St Cristina. It was definitely hard to narrow down all the options. |
Beautiful pictures once again. But 30C, oouf!
Don’t mind confessing I had to look up quark dumpling. That looks like a meal in itself. |
Sooo gorgeous!! So jealous of your wonderful treks!! The area around Corvara looks somewhat like the Bavarian landscape, eh?
Yup, it was 33C here (though lol I was not out hiking in it!!). The next morning, though I needed a jacket at 17C in the morning. Ahh. I love that the heat doesn't last too long here. Still sooo enjoying your photos and your walks and your descriptions! s |
Day 34 : Corvara
So quiet, roads closed for a cycling event (non competitive), but no cars or motorbikes this morning, really pleasant to amble the streets (there’s not many of them) without the noise. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c0ab576c3.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6b78d0fbe.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e02be6262.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e8512e9bd.jpeg And, blue sky, clear with no haze, cool, just perfect. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...70c71ca82.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...abe80d37b.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3ef51a423.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a9a16631f.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...250523b20.jpeg Stayed local as no bus service, from Colfosco (next village) we took the Colfosco gondola to the nearby Edelweiss hut area, then took a punt and walked uphill and on the higher trail (nerve wracking for me) around to Col Pradat lift where we lunched and descended by gondola. Wow, what a day. Stunning landscape, crisp clear air, cool enough for hiking, and every step higher revealing more majestic views. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...50b720a72.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...389b09336.jpeg Up past the winter chairlifts https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f97fbc156.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...af6a033b8.jpeg Dog having fun in the snow https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cbf86cf79.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...63a0f6d03.jpeg Up we go https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6d2c2f81c.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9fca556db.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f4f972424.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a869eb22b.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...940418a78.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b2247a678.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...699a1f64d.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...93951c5f8.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...590467a38.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d4acba153.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fbd2f5782.jpeg That’s our trail https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...02132de9a.jpeg Lunch here …. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...10c9061ec.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7eee88def.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d2a93103d.jpeg return by the gondola to Colfosco https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f301bb404.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...62a4345b8.jpeg New build attached to old https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...241549dff.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9c6e01086.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...137b32ad7.jpeg parking for all https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e19ff2f59.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...27beafd26.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...749cadbce.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...87a63cc9f.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ccf1e0544.jpeg |
We arrived back in Corvara about 4:30, so jumped on the Boe lift just for a quick look (closes at 5:30 and we were NOT hiking down)

Looks like a great day!
|
Wow! Outstanding! Amazing how blue that sky is without all that heat and humidity! Gorgeous pictures!
I found that trail and the Edelweiß Hütte and the Rifugio Col Pradat on Google Earth. It appears that Colfosco has a lot of apartments and pensions. My kind of town. |
Stunning photos! As always, I sigh for Italy. More soon, per favore.

I fell in love with Bressanone and stayed there. Three different trips. The Cathedral is beautiful and on Sunday’s it used to have a High Mass with orchestra and choir. Fabulous. I was there once for the Feast of the Epiphany when I also visited the small and charming Christmas market.
Also liked Bolzano and thought Otzi and his museum very moving. |
