Trip photos - Florence & Venice

In case anyone would like a peek, photos from our recent trip to Florence and Venice are now online at: http://tinyurl.com/2cq3v2

I've also been writing a trip report to accompany the pics but not had a chance to add to it over the past few days. Beware! Despite being unfinished, it's still really rather long, so maybe only of interest to those with plenty of spare time!

WOW! Thanks for posting the link. Your photos are just wonderful. I like how you fill the frame and cut off the subject at the edge (I'm not sure what the correct terminology is for that!).

DinPa May 1st, 2007 10:54 AM

Excellent photos! You certainly have the professional "eye." Wish I did.

We leave 2 weeks from today for Venice, but who's counting?

Those are truly spectacular. Some of these shots just give me the chills. Can't wait to be back there! Wonderful job.

Thanks everyone - although I can't personally take any credit for the pics - it's my husband who is the photogrpaher!

DinPa - have a great trip!

I haven't even looked at Venice and Florence yet! I saw Dorset on your home page and had to go there first. My body might be in FL but my heart and soul are somewhere along the Dorset coast. The pictures are magnificent..Corfe castle is especially lovely..and the birds in flight .WOW!!

Off to Italy now.

jody May 1st, 2007 12:13 PM

Utterly gorgeous! That Venice picture of the reflections in the water almost looks like a pre-historic cave painting

Thnak you so much for sharing your husband's brillant work!

wombat7 May 1st, 2007 12:38 PM

Lovely photos - what happened to the Chesil Beahch link. I finished the book a couple of weeks ago and was hoping that I could see your pictures

quiUK May 1st, 2007 01:04 PM

Hi Jody & Wombat,
Glad you enjoyed the pictures of Italy - and the Dorset ones too! My mother is originally from Dorset but hasn't lived there for years. Recently we've been lucky to spend a couple of weekends renting a cottage in the area with my folks. It really is a beautiful part of England!

Wombat - Neil had to remove the original Dorset pics this morning to free up some web space to load the Italy ones. He then didn't get around to changing the homepage (he has done so now though). Some more recent Dorset pics are here however: http://tinyurl.com/ywy3v8

The older ones of Chesil beach were mainly taken from Portland so more of an aerial view. If you'd like to see copies, then you can email him through his site. Hope that helps!

:)

Fabulous work !
I could cry looking at these.

LCBoniti May 1st, 2007 01:24 PM

These pictures are amazing (both Italy and Dorset). I missed your trip report so thank you for the link. I'll enjoy it this evening (supposed to be working now - hah!)

jody May 2nd, 2007 01:52 AM

These are so beautiful, I had to see them again this morning.

Piedmont_Phil May 2nd, 2007 01:56 AM

great pictures & interesting whch ones you (he) chose to convert to B&W. Thanks for sharing

travelbug05 May 2nd, 2007 03:12 AM

What beautiful pictures, you and your husband have really captured Venice! We leave in two weeks and I can't wait!! Thank you for sharing :)

mclaurie May 2nd, 2007 03:30 AM

Have only looked at Venice so far, but they're fabulous! What was going on in San Marco with the flags and the men in ceremonial dress? (sorry if you explain in the trip report-haven't gotten there).

highflyer May 2nd, 2007 04:29 AM

Hi quiUK,

I can't get the photos to load right now but I remember your excellent NYC report and photos from a while ago so I'll keep trying. Thanks for posting.

MarciaMarciaMarcia May 2nd, 2007 06:52 AM

quiUK, I knew when I read your report that your photos would be great!

Would you ask your husband a question for me? I noticed that he is using the Canon EOS. I have the EOS digital rebel and have trouble with my night shots. Would you ask him if he used the manual setting for his night shots? They are especially beautiful. I need some practice before I go. Thanks for sharing.

alphaj13 May 2nd, 2007 07:03 AM

Breathtaking. Wow. I leave tomorrow and now am more anxious than ever. Your (or your husband's I should say) photos are . . .wow! He could sell them! Where I live, people would love to have his stuff hanging on their walls!

kk21 May 2nd, 2007 07:39 AM

Beautiful, inspiring photos--artistic, warm, creative, interesting perspectives! Loved the chair hanging on the outside wall of the building in Venice. Thanks for sharing! Will read your trip report as we are leaving in about 2 weeks for the same cities. Looks as if you had warm weather for your trip?

travelfan1 May 2nd, 2007 07:42 AM

Can't see the photos at my home or work computer....why?....going to Venice and Florence on next trip and would really like to see them! :(

wombat7 May 2nd, 2007 07:46 AM

Thanks for the Dorset link - wonderful photos. Love the very first one!

Jim_Tardio May 2nd, 2007 09:31 AM

Very enjoyable...thanks for the link.

kk21 May 2nd, 2007 12:56 PM

MarciaMarciaMarcia, I have the "old" Canon EOS digital rebel 300D (their first digital model) and would recommend setting the ISO to 800, maybe use tv mode. An ISO of 1600 is usually pretty grainy. And try to use a tripod, monopod, lean against something, anything that will help you hold very still. Hope that helps!

Ranarama May 2nd, 2007 02:16 PM

Hi everyone, it's Neil here. Thought it was about time I registered so I can thank you all for your comments and answer a few questions.

MarciaMarciMarcia, most of the night shots were taken on a 30D which is pretty good with noise compared to the 350D. Most were at ISO 800, even 1600 on some.

I was also using a 24-70 f2.8 lens so it's pretty good in low light. If you want a really fast lens for not much money try the 50mm 1.8 prime. It's a bargain and great quality.

I took all of them in AV (Aperture Priority) mode. If I was hand-holding then I was on f2.8 all the time. Where possible I looked for something to perch the camera on and could then widen the aperture to maybe f8 for greater depth of field.

One other thing - I took everything in RAW. It gives you much greater flexibility to 'rescue' shots that aren't exposed perfectly.

Travelfan1, sorry you couldn't see the pictures. Try upgrading to the latest version of flash from adobe http://tinyurl.com/zgkz2

UNCBB113 May 2nd, 2007 04:18 PM

wow, great photographs. I enjoyed the trip report too - very well done, the remarkable work and effort you put into it shows.

MarciaMarciaMarcia May 2nd, 2007 04:48 PM

kk21 and Ranarama, thanks so much! Those tips are very helpful. I will get out there and practice. My challenge is always to keep it steady because I don't want to lug around the tripod everywhere. Again, great shots!

aucho53 May 2nd, 2007 04:55 PM

So beautiful! Thanks for posting and bringing back amazing memories from these 2 amazing cities!

I have to add just one more thing. I have many favorites but if I had to pick a winner it would be the man and the little barefoot fellow in Florence. If you entered it in one of those vacation photo contests, my money would be on you! Just precious!!

quiUK (and husband),
Absolutely LOVED the photographs of Italy! Your husband is a great photograper! quiUK, enjoyed your trip report--please continue!!!

takemealong Jul 15th, 2007 03:42 AM

I loved the pictures of Venice. My heart aches to go back and spend more time there.

squidward Jul 17th, 2007 07:01 AM

I have just viewed your photos - the set taken in New York, especially Grand Central Station, are stunning. Have not yet been to N.Y. but get the feel just by seeing your pics.

bashamj Jul 17th, 2007 08:15 AM

Stunning. Going next year and you have made me very excited.

do you ever use a digital and if so, what are your recommendations?

I've always just had film, but am starting to think about taking the leap.

Ranarama Jul 27th, 2007 11:40 AM

Didn't expect this thread to be coming back up after all this time! Thanks again for the comments everyone.

Bashamj - all my photos are taken on digital cameras but I can't really recommend anything without knowing what your budget is. I use a Canon but Nikon make equally good cameras for similar money...unless you're fortunate enough to have £4500 to spend on a 1Ds Mk11 in which case there's no choice!

EnglishOne Jul 27th, 2007 11:52 AM

Stunning photos, Im getting very excited about Florence now! ticking off the days

rickmav Jul 27th, 2007 11:58 AM

Didn't see the photos the first time around. They are wonderful. Made me want to catch a plane and get back there so I could try some of your angles and ideas. And you use light and shadows so well. Do you go out early in the morning? Do you have two cameras - to do the B&W and colour or edit that at home? How much editing do you find you end up doing and what software do you use? My favourites are the balloons and gondoliers having a break in Venice, and inside the dome in Florence. Well done!
