Just a question:
Are you sure you are connecting at Brussels to British Airways to Venice? They don't have a direct flight between the two - ba.com only gives a connecting flight via Gatwick. Do you mean Brussels Airlines? They fly twice daily from Brussels International (BRU) to Venice (VCE). They have a codeshare agreement with AA.
What happens is your luggage will be through-checked to VCE. When you get to BRU, as it's your entry point to Schengen, you go through passport control, and as you have arrived from outside EU/EEA, you go through security before you get to your gate for the Venice flight. Just remember the EU rule about carrying liquid on board - any liquid you've bought at Chicago duty free, unless it's 100ml (around 3ozs) or less and in a transparent plastic ziploc bag, will be confiscated.
