Too Long in Venice?
I am planning to spend the last four nights of my honeymoon in Venice. I've been told by some who have been there that its one night too long. Is this true? If so, is there a good place to stop overnight somewhere between Lake Como and Venice? It will be 3-7 July. Thanks.

Alternative places to stop would include Padua and Verona, but I don't think 4 nights in Venice is too long. I have only ever spent a week there, and there is far more I want to return and see.

4 days is about right for a honeymoon. After all, you don't want to spend too much of your honeymoon time traveling.
|
4 nights in Venice is not too long.
In addition to Venice itself, the islands or Burano and Murano and the Lido are all popular attractions and only a vaporetto ride away. So you could easily fill your days. (Some people also like Chiaggio, at the southern end of the lagoon, but it is not as popular as the first three). What you should do is a personal decision about how hectic you want your honeymoon to be. Verona would be a good town to research. You could also add another day to Lake Como. (your choice). Do you have any particular interests/ hobbies? |
We just spent 7 nights in Venice in October while taking day trips to Verona and Bologna-you'll definately not be bored after 4 nights.

If you look through the DK Eyewitness Guide to Venice, you will come away with more than enough to do.

Corkee,
My wife and I spent five nights in Rome and four in Venice in September 2004. It was our first trip to Italy. Very relaxing, particularly the four nights in Venice. It is *not* too long - Venice is magical. |
I'd say it in another way... 4 nights is the *minimum* to me to visit Venice.
Venice is funny that way. Seems people either love it or hate it, rarely are neutral. Maybe the "some" who told you that are in the 2nd camp. |
In general we have found that people who did not like Venice, spent less than a day there. People who liked Venice stayed at least one night then they started to fall in love with the city.
|
Bob C, I absolutely agree. On my previous trips to Venice (2xs) I had only spent one night there and was not a big fan BUT my DH convinced me to base there on this last trip of 7 nights. I fell in love with it. We had more day trips planned that we cancelled to just "chill" in Venice proper.

Four nights in Venice is not too much especially if you want to go to any of the islands. In June 2002 my husband and two kids spent 2 nights and could have stayed longer--not enough time to see the islands. In July of 2005 we travelled the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia, into Slovenia and ended with 4 nights in Venice. We were able to enjoy Venice at a much more relaxed pace and could easily have stayed for a week. We also loved Burano! Happened to be there and saw the evening passeggiata (stroll). It was so fun! I would recommend getting a 72 hour vaporetti pass. You can hop on and off whenever you want.
|
Our first trip to Venice as a couple, we spent 5 nights. We didn't even have time to see such major sights as the Accademia and Guggenheim museums or any of the other islands.
|
I've been to Venice three times, each time for four days. That was perfect each time. It's not large, but there's plenty to keep you occupied for 4 days. I'd stick with your plan.
|
Sounds good to me. We stayed there a week last fall and still didn't make it to the islands. And I'll be there 7 nights in June and with the hubby again in Sept. for 5 nights. We'll be getting to the islands on this trip.

I agree that 4 nights is a good idea. Just make sure you have air conditioning. If you get bored, or annoyed by the crowds, try visiting Verona or Torcello. Or even the Lido. But I think if you take it easy, stay up late and sleep in, you'll be happy you stayed those four nights.
By the way, what I do disagree with is that the people who dislike Venice didn't like it because they didn't spend enough time there. I've known people who spent weeks and months in Venice and simply don't like it. I spent a week there and felt overjoyed to get to see so much fabulous art and architecture (I've seen canals other places) but I'd never want to live in Venice, and there are plenty of other places in Italy I'd like to live. |
Hi C,
If you only have 4 nights, so be it. If you can, try to extend it to 5. You can always see a lake. There is only one Venice. ((I)) |
I think four nights is perfect on a honeymoon. We spent four nights there our first time in order to renew our wedding vows. We returned this past fall and found that a week still wasn't long enough for us. :)
|
But you are unlikely to see a lake view as stunningly beautiful as that from Bellagio. Enjoy both.
|
No such thing as too long in Venice. It's beautiful.
|
If it starts to feel too long, you can take a day trip by boat to one of the islands or train to another town nearby.
