Hard to believe this is from 2005! Time flies but always enjoy this report!

Wow! What a trip. It's a great tale to remind us each to select our travel partners carefully.

As Barb and I are in the preliminary planning stages of our 2015 European meet-up, since this resurfaced I have reread most of it, and it hasn't deterred me at all - if anything I can't wait to meet up with my dear friend Barb once again!

As an aside, does anyone know what happened to SusanP?

I used to really enjoy her trip reports (which always included limoncello in some way or other!)

I you REALLY want to "know" about someone, travel or play cards with them.

What a treasure!

I went back and reread this before I planned a 9-person trip to Ireland, but it ended up being for naught. All of them cancelled out, I went solo, and had a fantastic time :D

This is the best report!

bookmarking-I want to go back to Rome!

What a classic TR and a Fodor's treasure!

I read the whole thread and enjoyed it immensely! I travel solo to Europe, and love it. Every once in a while, for a nano second, I'll think about asking somebody if they want to go along.....but I really don't want to be a tour guide or feel resonsible for someone's good time.

Barb, Would love to read more of your trip reports.

An oldie but a goodie... A classic warning for the ages!

Entertaining 10 yrs later! Thanks!

I'm wondering what would be a suitably generous "10 yr anniversary" gift for Barb's trip report?

This is one of my favorite reports. Thanks for reposting.

10 years ago and still one of the most entertaining report ever.

Well funny that this has come up because two of my Diva friends are suggesting that because a very important landmark birthday is coming up for us in 2016, that we should go on a trip somewhere quite wonderful to celebrate. D, the friend who was a bit crazed on our Diva trip, but has returned to her less crazed self over the last 10 yrs, suggested Greece. She said it's time to get our traveling pants on!! I suggested perhaps a weekend in Portland, OR in an airbnb with separate bedrooms, ha.

I am off on another solo trip in October. Rome, Tropea, Amsterdam. Fellow Fodorite Julia is joining me in Tropea for four days, so that will be loads of fun. Tropea is a little off the tourist's map and I'm really looking forward to some relaxing, soaking up the Calabrian charm and getting serious about the food and vino.

I always loved this trip report, Barb.

I look at your critics and laugh--those same people made me change my posting name years ago. I made a rather innocuous posting and somehow got psychoanalyzed about my subliminal intentions, none of which still make sense.

FYI--no Ambien or other substances involved; just kneejerk "meangirl" (or "meanguy") reactions. I still have no idea how they can be well regarded on this forum with such constant pseudo-intellectual poison darts.

But back to your report:

So many of us travel with others and write, "Never again." You really clarified WHY never again.

I think what I appreciated most of all was not your colorful complaints about everyone on the trip (I loved your writing) or your fabulous knowledge about dining areas (I bookmarked those for sure) but instead your realization that Eiffel Tower was someone you grew to respect.

Bette Midler, for sure.

Thanks for the memories,
AZ
