This forum is so addicting.
I am late for work....I haven't talked to my husband for days....my kids just roll there eyes at my as they pass the computer room and I refer to everyone who responds as my friends, "my friends say Del Senato is wonderful" I think I need fodor's rehab. Thanks to everyone who has helped me plan this trip (and past trips).
Hey panucci, *again* I find myself agreeing w/you!! I first discovered this board when I had a ? about a trip we were planning. I had never participated in a talk forum but once I started, now I can't stop!!
Add me to your list of true believers!
...and then the obsession Grows...and you find
WEBCAMS! AAAAGH |
But the true test of addiction is when you come back daily even when you are not planning a trip for yourself.
Yup.
Agree with all totally. I've been addicted since 2002.
and it makes me want to travel more.
You should pay more attention to your spouse and children. They are the important things in your life, not this forum.
Is there a destination where one could find/regain some sense of humor?
Hopefully one of you "addicts" could help. |
Yes, it's addictive all right. You find yourself reading about places that you had no intention of ever visiting, or maybe had never even heard of...and all of a sudden you're thinking "Hmm...maybe I should revise my trave plans to include that country/city/museum/site of natural beauty..."
The downside of this is that sometimes I feel overwhelmed by information. I find myself thinking "If I visit just one more website, I'll have the complete picture," but of course one more website leads you to another, and another, until you feel like throwing in the towel. I have to impose "No browsing days" on myself. |
Hi gojacks--I think my screen name tells you my profession and while you are, of course, correct that children and family are what matter in lfe, I think you may have lost sight of the hyperbole that panucci was expressing. The kind of person who is wantonly neglecting her family is not the kind of person who generally admits it. In short, she was exaggerating to make a point and a joke.
I'm a perfect fit by Bob's definition. I've visited several times per day since 1998. Fodor's rehab, now there's an idea!
It is addictive. And thanks to St.Cirq and others, I'll discover the Dordogne as well as Uzès and surrounding areas come September.

Socialworker..I think perhaps you may have lost sight of the sarcasm I was expressing. Although we can agree that my interpretaion of family values are correct.
Hello, my name is P_M and I'm a Fodoroholic....
Yes, it's the most addictive web site I've ever visited. Since joining earlier this year, my productivity at work has dropped terribly. I want to stop but I can't. Maybe we need to start a 12-step program for our fellow addicts.... Naaahhh, let's just enjoy the rush!! |
Fodors rehab--I'm in but where is it?! Vienna?? Rio?? Venice???
OWJ, Paris, of course. I'm late for an appointment...gotta run.
I agree about just reading adventures about places I have never heard of or have even thought about and yet, thinking, Mmm--sounds like my "kind of place." I am taking a trip to Wales in Sept. to visit my daughter and am taking a friend who has never been out of the USA. I find I am talking to him about a "side trip" to Majorica or Italy and rattling off places to see and his eyes glaze over! Bless him--he knows when to let me go on and on and tunes me out when I get these "flights of fancy".
I know how bad off I am when I actually get upset when the Fodors website is down with technical difficulties! Or when I refer (more than once in a single conversation) to things I've read on the board.
Another sign of addiction is to look forward to M_Kingdom2's posts. I'm actually missing them these days that he/she is in Spain. Wonder how it's going there?
I was just thinking the very same thing-- that this website is habit-forming! But so helpful, too, when actually planning a trip. We recently went to Europe and received great recommendations for hotels there. I'm a confirmed addict now. How else would I have known that one pension I was considering in Prague was across the street from a seedy strip joint? Not what we needed with kids in tow. Thanks to all you fodorites who helped with your invaluable advice.
I miss M_K too. I don't necessarily agree with her all the time, but she is so entertaining. I can't wait to read the Spain trip report.
Been coming here since my first trip to Italy in 2001 and usually check in every day. Because of a wonderful post from Jodie who was stationed in Naples at the time, about Procida, I ended up going there in 02. Even stayed at the same hotel. I had never even heard of the place until I read his report, but the way he described it and the great time he had there, I went and it was wonderful. Met tons of great people. It is probably one of the less "touristed" places I have been.
In 19 days I will celebrate my 3rd anniversary with Fodor's.
I need to join Fodor's Anonymous :) At least I join this website from work only! (Am I in denial?) |
Definitely addicting... also enlightening... we will travel to places we never would have thought of were it not for this forum!
Me, too!
I am always thinking about where my next vacation (or 2 or 3 will be), even if I'm not officially "planning" at the moment. The problem I have is that I read about all of these great places, and now I want to go everywhere! I am going to San Francisco and Arizona in September, and am thinking about a trip sometime in the first half of 2005. Thanks, in part to this forum, my options for that trip vary from Rio (a friend wants to go) to Quebec City for winter carnival (read about that one today) to Jazz Fest in New Orleans (been thinking about it for a few years) to a combo of Poland/Hungary/Slovakia. How ever to decide? And therein lies the source of my addiction. :D Karen |
... and another thing. I confess.. I think I've become a "travel forum" snob too. I mean, have you ever gone on to some of the "major internet" carrier's in-house forums? Whew-baby!
planning a trip to NY and Yale area so went on line under US..Its just NOT the same!!!! so hey anyone know of a good B&B in Greenwich Conn? Actually need to go from NY to New Haven,so could be somewhere else along the way..
Ah, such a familiar set of symptoms. I have to chuckle at the thought of "visiting" this site daily. I just leave it on an open window on my computer and check it whenever I'm at my desk.
Maybe we should develop a test to take to see if you have a "problem." 1. Do you check in even when you are on vacation? If so, do you only check your threads or do you still cruise the new posts? 2. Exactly how upset do you get when the site is down? How often do you check to see if it is back up yet? 3. How many times have you written directly to the [email protected]? 4. Are friends and family complaining about your addiction? 5. Do you feel left out when there is a GTG in Paris or Boston and you weren't there? Have you considered traveling somewhere just to attend a GTG? More? |
Addicted? I'm not addicted. I can stop any time I want to. I just don't want to stop. JoeG |
6. Cleanliness of your house before and after discovery of fodors.com?
Here's another:
7. After a trip, which do you do first: assemble your own journal, pictures, and mementos, or post your trip report on fodors? |
For Kaudrey:
The best jazz festival anywhere is the one in Montreal in July. At least that's what the participating jazz musicians say... |
Oh, sure, Eloise, that's just what I need - ANOTHER place to add to a list of possibilities! :)
Seriously, though, thanks for the info. Unfortunately, July is generally not the best time for me to try to plan a trip, because I have a standing week long trip to the beach in July with a group of friends... Karen |
Jocelyn_P,
I had to laugh about the order of doing things after getting back from a trip! We got back Sunday night from France, and I still haven't unpacked, but I've been posting my trip report! |
greetings from a fellow addict; i have just discovered the sorrento webcam and am hooked. My husband calls from work "so whats going on in sorrento tonight?" Fodors is my Godsend for all my trips. I dont know what i'd do without this site!!
I go in and out of it, but when I'm planning a trip, I get really addicted. Once a day isn't enough because there are so many messages. As Vokuta said, sometimes it's overwhelming how much information there is. For our recent trip to France and Belgium, at some point, about two weeks before our departure, I realized that I actually had enough information! And I wasn't having time to organize it. So I went cold turkey for those last two weeks. It really freed up my time. But now I'm back even though we probably won't go to Europe again for a couple of years (sad). When we got back, first I organized all my papers and decided what to toss, and then I put our photos in an album, and now I'm back here. I'll post something soon about our trip.
ADD ME TO THE LIST OF FODOR ADDICTS!
I love reading various information about places I have been, and places I plan to go to. As soon as I return from a trip to Europe, I am already trying to plan for the next trip to Europe. The wealth of useful information is something that is very "special" about this board. I have to "fight the power" not to look at this forum during work. |
Just today a friend e-mailed me with questions about Costa Rica. I told her I have never been there, but I referred her to the Latin America section of this board. I told her she will get all the info she needs and more for trip planning.
If she becomes addicted too, does that make me a pusher? |
