I remember reading the Secrets of the Seine.I'll dig it out and look for that chapter.
Thanks, cig.

Patrick, how's the ATM -card -only situation in Paris? We're going to Italy and France in September and I can't decide what to do about our ATM cards. Like you, we've never had problems with them before.

Patrick Jul 12th, 2004 08:35 AM

We pulled 500 euro out at a BNP (Bank of America partner) in Lyon over a week ago and so haven't had to draw any here in Paris. But I don't think there's any reason to worry. We had no problem in Cannes or Lyon.
I assume you are referring to the issues I mentioned in Italy with some bank ATMs now only accepting cards that have a Visa logo (debit as well as ATM card). I hope I didn't overstate that problem. We still found plenty of banks that have not yet gone to that system.

Just one more time--what do you think this little town would be like on a weekday? Our schedule is all out of Sundays. Thanks.

Patrick Jul 12th, 2004 08:45 AM

I think it would be pretty much the same. I think the little market is only on Sundays, but you can visit many other markets similar. I suppose Sunday brings out more locals as they shop at the market then stroll and go to lunch.
By the way, there is a very large, double barge that is a church (complete with stained glass windows) and a community center. You can visit it, but we didn't as people were just entering for the church service.

Gee, cher_cher, I hope I haven't overstated the place. It is not a particularly pretty or scenic village. It is strictly a working class town filled with barges. It just happens to be a little different than most other French villages because of that. As one person mentioned, it is similar to a large floating trailer park.

You have not overstated the place in the least, Patrick. It just isn't every day that you run into a floating trailer park. :D

Cher_Cher, read "The secret Life of the Seine" it captures the flavor of the place.

The friendliest place in Paris is London, lol. Just kidding. Glad you had such a wonderful experience, Patrick. A nice break from all of the negative complaints. Maybe with less Americans visiting they're actually starting to miss us! Great story.

Patrick - Thank you for such a lovely insight! I know Paris will be a destination once again for us in about 2 years. I wish it was tomorrow as I have so much to see and do. We will definitely make the suburb Conflans St. Honorine a visit!
