The difference between Holland and the Netherlands. Fun.

My DH sent me this. It may help clear up some misconceptions.

Oh at Curaçao is pronounced with a soft c, hence the cedilla.

And once you've worked that lot out you may enjoy his explanation of the United Kingdom too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNu8XDBSn10

I
m not sure that the people of the Republic of Ireland would consider themselves "British" in any way. Technically, yes - but politically - no.

Actually, I learned a lot by watching the Holland/Netherlands video!! Felt rather sheepish about some misconceptions I had. One of these days need to go there...Thanks for the link!

funny - my DS had been telling me off for referring to the Netherlands as "Holland" and now I know why - thanks, Hetismij!

I watched the Netherlands play in the World Cup a couple of times, and am fairly certain the fans were chanting "Holland, Holland".

Thanks for the Video, entertaining and informative.

If you go to 2:30 in the video, the narrator missed an opportunity to explain why the Kingdom of the Netherlands still has a French slogan...(so I feel ok calling them Pays-Bas)

My father taught me a rhyme to remember the kings and queens in the right order.

if pressed and provided with a sherry or two, i can still remember it.

And then there's the fact that Amsterdam is the capital of the country even though the parliament and government is in The Hague! ;^)

<<My father taught me a rhyme to remember the kings and queens in the right order.>>

Here's one version:

Willie, Willie, Henry, Ste
Henry, Dick, John, Henry three.
One, two, three Eds, Richard two,
Henry four, five, six, then who?

Edward four, five, Dick the bad,
Harrys twain, and Ned the lad.
Mary, Bessie, James the Vain,
Charlie, Charlie, James again.

William and Mary, Anna Gloria,
Four Georges, William, and Victoria.
Ed seven ruled till nineteen-ten
When George the fifth came in and then,

Ed eighth left when Simpson beckoned,
Leaving George and Liz the second.

mine's a little different:

Willie, Willie, Harry, Stee,
Harry Dick John, and Harry three,
Edward the first, second, third, Richard two,
Harry the fourth, fifth, sixth, then who?

Edward the fourth and fifth, Dick the Bad,
Harrys' Twain and Ned the lad.
Mary, Elizabeth, James the Vain,
Charlie, Charlie, James again.

William and Mary, Anna gloria,
Four Georges, William and Victoria.

which is where we stopped.

lavenreye - i like the ending to yours.

pass the sherry!
