The Devil Wears Prada
Just saw the movie and wanted to mention there were some scenes of Paris and many of NYC.
|
Yeah SeaUrchin and I just want to mention our idiotic 16 screen theater in my city is not showing this movie. See why I complain!!
|
Did you like the movie? DH and I were just talking about going to see it tonight.
|
Yes, it was enjoyable. As everyone is saying M. Streep was excellent! The whole cast was excellent.
I was just disappointed in the ending, I would have added more interest and done the opposite, but I won't say any more. I wonder if anyone agrees with me, the audience I was with seemed fine with it. I do recommend it. LI, I wonder if it is limited release? You have my condolences! |

Above reviewer says " The Devil Wears Prada is two films in one: a caustic, energetic satire of the fashion world and a cautionary melodrama. The first works; the second doesn't ...." |
Hi SeaUrchin, it is just that our local theater only seems to show movies that interest children, teens and young men. Had the same problem with the theater where I lived before. So went into SF to see the movies that interested us. But a bit of a hassle to go to SF to just see a movie from where I live now.
I was so mad this weekend, LOL as I really was looking forward to seeing it. The friend that was going to go with me was disgusted too and was my daughter. Bet there were a lot of angry women here this weekend, sigh. |

Just kidding. Have you thought about moving to a more "civilized town"?
|
Yes bill, Rome as a matter of fact!! And that may happen in a few years.
Bill I live where I do as my family is here. It is a friendly easy place to live but to say it is not the most exciting is putting it midly! Well except for the shop on Main St., right SeaUrchin? ;;) |
SeaUrchin, the title alone is great and from what it sounds like, the movie is too! LOL :) I would love to see it and will have to catch it while it is still in theaters, otherwise, I will wait for it on video. Thanks for the posting.
|
Huitres, I read the book when it first came out. If you like to read on the plane it might be a fun book for you to take with you!
|
I wonder if MK2 has a part? LOL
|
I agree with the critic Kappa posted. Except I did like Anne Hathaway in her role. I would have liked to have left the theatre before the sappy ending, but then again, that is me.
|
I saw it yesterday.It was a couple of hours of fun,nothing at all serious.The clothes-to die for!!!Meryl Streep?Flawless,of course.
I read the book a couple of years ago,and I believe the ending was faithful to it,as was the tone of the whole movie. |
Streep was good - the rest of the cast ranged from OK to amateurish. Had been told it was a comedy. Where was the funnny part? (No one laughed at all at the theater I was in.)
As for the satire - I have had bosses similar to that. I have even been a boss similar to that (not coffee and dry cleaning, but giving non-stop orders to a group of juniors as they ran down the hall behind me on the way out the door to the client). That's not satire - it's just real life in a lot of businesses. |
Yikes...every time I read of a novel that is made into a flick, I shutter.
I've been going through this painful exercise daily for the past five months, having my 600-page historical novel translated into a two-hour movie script. Every little change and every character elimination or reduction felt like having a lobotomy without anasthesia. At least the screen writer and I are still on civil terms. For now. (Will be filmed in Romania eventually). Stu T.(wife and I are going to see "Devil" tomorrow) |
I spent a wonderful week in Paris at the end of May. When 2 of the movie's characters walked along a street near Notre Dame, exactly where I walked several times, I grinned like the proverbial Cheshire Cat! I totally missed their dialogue b/c I was so busy noticing the window displays were different! DUH.
|
Read the book when it first came out, and I just returned from seeing the movie. I thought it was fun, and although not a comedy, my daughter and I laughed at quite a few of the lines. My daughter traded in the modeling world for motherhood, so we had a few laughs.
|
Well, yes, satire is the wrong word I guess.
I will just say I enjoyed the movie and so did the man I was with, so not just for chicks! |
And Stu you are counting the hours until then? Or not perhaps. But you are a good husband!
|
Um, Stu, if you are a writer I
wonder if you've been behind the shutters too long ? Shudder to think !? Show of hands...? R5 |
razzle...as I've said before, that's why my publisher assigns a tough editor to my stuff...of course, you are correct.
Love Italy: we try to see a flick once a week...sometime it's wife's choice, other times it's mine...a trade-off usually. "Devil" is her choice...mine as "Crossword" last week. Stu T. |
I enjoyed it.
I enjoy any film that has great clothes, NYC in all her glory AND Paris!! what can be wrong with that?? :D Meryl Streep was so good and reminded me so much of Liz Tilberus..the Emily character was hilarious..I liked it ~ |
I saw it last night too and LOVED the Paris scenes (along with the background music :) ) ! All that movie did was make me want to get on a plane.
I really thought Meryl's character would be a lot worse. As is typical, the previews reveal all the best lines. I'm hardly an expert on her but, didn't Anne Hathaway play a "Cinderella type" of character in a previous movie too? |
Anne Hathaway played Ella in Ella Enchanted, an adaptation of an award-winning older kids' novel about a cinderella character. She was also one of the stars of the Princess Diaries series, which was a modern-day rags-to-riches type of story. She was also the voice of Little Red in Hoodwinked. This role for her (in the Devil)is something she could play asleep. But I really enjoyed the movie; my favorite character was Emily! Her new diet: "It's very effective; I don't eat anything at all, and when I think I am going to faint I eat a cube of cheese," followed by "I'm just one stomach flu away from my goal weight!"
That is, in my opinion, worth the price of admission all by itself. :D |
Yeah, the whole Size 6 thing in general was pretty funny!
|
I'm just back from the movie and it was a HOOT!! DH laughed through the whole thing, but of course won't admit to enjoying such a "chick flick." ;;)
:-)) |
I liked it, too. I laughed as did the audience here in Atlanta.
The first assistant character stole every scene she was in and I always like to see Stanley Tucci. |
A friend of mine has a small part in it (he was also in several episodes of Sex & The City, so knew the stylist for TDWP).
I'll go see it for Meryl Streep, to look at the clothes, and to watch for my friend of course (he's not a full time actor but manages to get small parts in lots of moviews...In Her Shoes, Hitch, Sixth Sense, A Beautiful Mind, Eraser, Independence Day, Godzilla, Invincible, Lady in the Water, etc. etc. so his appearances have become our personal version of Where's Waldo) |
Speaking of Where's Waldo, it was easy to spot the original "Jimmy" in Superman Returns, but totally missed the original "Lois"...who's getting on up there in years. Anyone spot her??
|
sounds like a very annoying book/film.
|
Saw the movie yesterday and enjoyed the peek at the world of fashion. Tucci does a great job a usual..a versatile actor...isn't this story based on a real person?
|
Supposedly based on Wintour but Streep, among others, has apparently taken great pains to disavow any and all possible "connections" in that regard.
|
I saw it "by coincidence" yesterday because I was walking by the Times Square theater- It was so hot outside, and I ducked into the lobby to grab some airconditioning, and someone walked up to me and offered me a free ticket! What luck... I enjoyed it and think Patricia Field did a great job with the clothes. I loved Stanley Tucci (l tend to love everything he does) and thought Ms Streep was, as always, brilliant.
Seaurchin- I thought the ending was a bit of a let down too,storywise- but the final closeup of Streep and her facial expressions were fantastic, and the audience applauded her! The street scenes and hotel scenes of Paris were beautiful. |
Anne Hathaway needs acting lessons and a makeover!
|
You have to love a movie that has wonderful scenes of NY and Paris, and great fashion as well!

I saw it yesterday. I recently read the book and enjoyed it - and thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I think they did a great job of translating this book into a movie.
At the end, the audience spontaneously burst into applause - that doesn't happen often. Loved the scenes of NY and especially Paris. |
Bellastar, welcome back, I didn't mind the last scene, just the decision of Andy. I might be over analyzing but it seemed to me that her dysfunctional friends wanted to hold her back for their own reasons.
|
And....there are plenty of high pressure careers like hers, you have to be up to holding your own if you are serious about what you are doing. I it would have been more interesting if she would have wanted to join in the frey! Grow as a character and all of that instead of going backwards to what she was.
Then there could have been a sequel of her own career. OK, I took it too seriously I suppose! lol |
I kinda disagree that her friends were "dysfunctional" as opposed to having a different viewpoint.
Nobody, IMO, was as UNattractive, despite the "fashion" and that overdne eye shadow than Miranda's first minion-in-waiting. This movie is, ultimately, all about Streep and her superior performance. As was recently printed in a review: Miranda: "Everyone wants to be us." "No, Meryl, ewveryone wants to be YOU!" |
