Stein am Rhein is fascinating for those who are interested in elaborately painted buildings. Its claim to fame is its little main street.

cparris, are you sure you can't combine Colmar with Obernai? Obernai would be a much better place to stay and two nights is more reasonable than one. J.

travelsolo,

Yes, Stein am Rhein is definitely worth seeing. Do yourself a favour and include it in your cycling trip.

cparris,

I agree with the previous posters, it is much moving around. I like the idea to stay two nights in Obernai. I have been to Colmar and don't think it deserves more than a couple of hours.

We are ending up staying 1 night in Colmar and 2 in Obernai. I thought to stay in Colmar because it is at the beginning of the wine road and Obernai is near the end and that seemed to make sence. I also want to sight see between Stein am Rhine and Colmar. I thought to stop in Freiburg at least to see the Cathedral and possibly the Augustinermuseum?

jmw and Ingo - Thank you! I'll include Stein am Rhein in my plans.

Ingo Nov 28th, 2005 11:56 AM

cparris: I chose Freiburg as a base for 5 days last year (May 2004) and made several day trips from there (Colmar, Basel).

Freiburg is a nice town, but it is not really worth too much time if you come from Stein am Rhein and drive on to Colmar. I will admit that the cathedral (Münster) is very beautiful. On the other hand ... it's just another gothic cathedral. If you want to see the highlights you need to join a guided tour which starts 2.30 pm and takes more than an hour. Not the best choice if it is only a short stop on the drive to Colmar.

The Augustinermuseum was under reconstruction when I was there, so I cannot comment on this.

Definitely plan some photo stops in the Black Forest. Titisee e.g. and Ravennaschlucht (gorge).

I was thinking to stop in Titsee. I have to do my reading to see where to stop. Well, I have time now that I have the hotels booked. That is always good.

Ingo Nov 29th, 2005 11:29 AM

You have the hotels booked? So, please let us know which hotels!

I still have a few choices to make. For example, in Zurich, to choose between the Adler and the Romantik hotel Sonne and in Luzern. I will post soon when I get some time...I have been working alot recently.

I'll let you know about the Adler when I return early June. Go ahead and make your reservations -- you can always cancel. ((b))
