Speaking of Trinny & Susannah, why are they always grabbing their poor victim's boobs?

Leely May 25th, 2006 03:35 PM

Have a great trip in PV! Go to Trio and get the soft shelled crab with asparagus. Mmm.

enzian May 25th, 2006 03:42 PM

Wait! You're going to wear those new "ugly yet comfortable" shoes in PV???!!!??? You'll bring the fashion police down upon us all. . .

mikemo May 25th, 2006 04:19 PM

Suze,
Not a PV fan, but your comments are mostly lots more "balanced" than mine.
M (SMdA, Gto.)

Scarlett May 25th, 2006 04:22 PM

lol, mike, even though you are unbalanced , I like your posts too :D

suze May 25th, 2006 04:43 PM

Mikemo, my "home away from home" is a very specific area in the Old Town part of Puerto Vallarta...

suze May 25th, 2006 04:49 PM

does 'living local' help my reputation? if i promise not to wear a vest & tank top with those ugly sandals?? and try at all times to stay on-topic on Fodor's???

michellen May 25th, 2006 04:51 PM

I love Suze, too!

Scarlett May 25th, 2006 05:43 PM

..and try at all times to stay on-topic on Fodor's???

Oh please don't !!

Carrybean...I risk getting drawn and quartered for this, but twas I who outted the offending member. I wasn't alone, nor first, in this however.

It was pretty obvious it was getting very personal, and I made certain I avoided certain posts. No one should be subject to an attack for being helpful, or heavens forbid, having a sense of humor. And that was what Suze was attacked for in the "offending" post.

Carrybean May 25th, 2006 11:11 PM

Ah, twas you! I knew I remembered something about it & thought that was the reason Suze drew the fire. Thanks for clearing that up.

Guy18 May 26th, 2006 03:16 AM

I feel compelled to provide a slightly different perspective. First of all, I also appreciate suze and her opinions very much (as well as, by the way, tcreath's and LovesItaly who always project a very kind screen personality IMO :) ) so this is in no way a criticism of her or anyone else on the "dehydration" thread.

I do think, however, that one needn't be a psychology major to discern that the OP in that thread is in some pain. And I don't just mean her chapped lips. Yes, she did lash out at suze a bit, but it didn't come across as mean as much as..."I'm in a place right now where I can't deal with the highbrow jokiness--please oblige." But rather than understanding and letting it go, it became a kick-her-while-she's-down session. (And again that is not directed at suze or anyone in particular. Nor do I think it was intentional.) Maybe I always sympathize with the underdog. And yes, I understand that anyone who subjects him/herself to a public forum is taking a risk, but I've come to find this is (with a few glaring exceptions) an especially compassionate place in cyberworld.

TheVagabondLady May 26th, 2006 03:30 AM

Well Suze, I for one appreciate your posts as well as many other posts from various posters on fodors. I find the information I gleen from all of you more experienced well traveled posters to be insightful and informative. Something, this particular poster (me) is very grateful for. The information and tips have proven to be very valuable to me as I am sure to many others.

I hope all posters who have been very kind to share their knowledge and advice and handy tips continue to post regardless of what a few may say or do to try and discourage you or cause you to have 2nd thoughts on whether you should post or not....please keep posting. Does anyone realize that many of these posts have often times saved an entire trip for someone. Something they may not have been aware of was brought to their attention causing a less seasoned traveler to re-think their trip and perhaps even made peoples trips more positive and better experiences.

Well, I for one applaud the posters who take the time to graciously pass along any and all information so that I may have a better, safer and more pleasant vacation experience.

Keep going...posters...

So how about them Bucs.....LOL

CAPH52 May 26th, 2006 03:52 AM

I guess I'm missing something here. After reading the other thread twice, I don't get how Suze was off-topic. Yes, she joked around a bit. But all of her responses, at least up until she was taken to task by the OP, had to do with trying to make the OP feel better. And, as for Suze's response being a "kick 'em while they're down" kind of thing, she was certainly the one who was attacked.

Sue_xx_yy May 26th, 2006 04:00 AM

Sorry, folks, I came in late, and missed the entire Dehydration episode: (that's the trouble with this place, one can't just go to the newstand and buy a synopsis....)So the following remarks are just general observations:

Regarding sense of humour: as I have myself sometimes (okay, often) found to my cost, humour - or should that be, intended humour - doesn't always translate well. It's notorious for backfiring - which is why so much energy is spent defending jokes that weren't universally successful. While it is natural enough to want to defend one's actions when things go awry, the point is that telling a joke successfully is as much a social skill as taking a joke successfully. So to say "I was only kidding" carries the risk of implying that the offended listener should take most if not all of the blame for the failure in social interaction.

The same holds when one is trying to help, as for when one is trying to be funny. We aren't owed automatic understanding, simply because we hoped and wanted to be understood. The burden of responsibility for successful communication is still at least fifty per cent on the person delivering the information. So again, the defense "I was only trying to help" while very natural and very human, carries the risk of unfairly assessing too much blame on the other party.

And finally, for those times when one feels one has been the target of ingratitude: it can help to remember that we don't, really, offer help here entirely a disinterested exercise. To be the one helping is to volunteer to occupy the position of competence - not exactly a self-denying position! So it's nice if it works out for both parties, and if not, well, nothing has truly been lost, that one must mourn or be consoled for its passing.

Guy18 May 26th, 2006 04:21 AM

CAPH, I think you're missing my point. And since I'm sure many others will as well, I'll just say it one more time and then give it a rest:

1. No one in particular was INTENDING to "kick 'em when she's down." I was not intending to lay blame anywhere, just to point something out.

2. The OP DOES overreact. She was out of line. BUT she also strikes me, if you read between the lines, to be in a lot of pain. Maybe my reading the thread after the fact made that clearer and gave some perspective (all the more reason not to criticize any of OP's detractors). I couldn't help feeling sorry for her. That's all I'm saying.

suze May 26th, 2006 07:14 AM

Thanks to each one of you for my "15 minutes of fame"! And to Luisah, for starting this thread so we could clear the air.

No danger I will quit posting on Fodor's unless they ban me from the forum. And certainly not because one inexperienced and over-enthusiastic poster insults me.

To clarify, it was just one person, under two different screen names, who for some reason doesn't like me... my "views" or my "lifestyle" and found my comments "condescending".

To Guy's kind observations, my impression is more that of seeking attention based on numerous threads started that don't ask questions that need an answer. More chat room or blog style.

There are many other regular posters here patiently contributing every day who have far greater travel experience than I do. It is the collective body of knowledge we create that makes this forum such an amazing resource. And hopefully a place to share a few laughs.

Wow, and I haven't even had my coffee yet.

Guy18 May 26th, 2006 08:06 AM

suze, thanks for understanding my intention. And you could very well be right about your observation.

starrsville May 26th, 2006 08:38 AM

The problem with business travel is that one misses the excitement on Fodor's when one is one the road!

ilovetotravel29 May 26th, 2006 08:48 AM

I am sorry that many of you feel I was bashing suze. I was not. I only stated to keep certain topics with the original posting.

I think her even bringing up the post only adds fuel to the fire. Personally, like I have said previously, we don't see eye to eye. And that is fine. As adults we can agree to disagree. It does not need to turn into some sort of popularity contest especially since I wasn't bashing her.
