Having lived in NYC for over 30 years and having been friends with and worked with many gay men, I find this remark , even from someone with limited knowledge of what she is talking about - insulting .

No, I should think that you would realize that a very small Southern town is not the most hospitable place for men or women to be openly gay.

I don't know, I was going to say something about the "gaudy and theatrical" bit too, but then I realized that I have advocated wearing ballroom dance shoes as a comfortable alternative to heels. In the daytime! And then I went and mocked Town & Country.

I didn't know that only homosexuals could possess gaydar. I am learning a lot tonight: I am not middle aged, not matter what I think, and my so called gaydar is something else. And I thought I had great gaydar. ;-(

Returning to an earlier point (though still not the OP's one), the question of middle age is a particular bugaboo of mine. Middle age is a range, rather than a very specific point. Many people consider the range to be either age 40-60 (following Erik Erikson, I suppose), or 35-60 (I agree with the latter).

People easily grasp that youth is a range of ages in a lifespan; why is it hard to see middle age similarly? Why take it as calling oneself at the exact midpoint of life?

BTW, tedgale, I think your Latin is flawless and impressive, though my own Latin is too far gone for that to be a valuable endorsement.
