There are lot's of local car rentals in Iceland. They are smaller then Sixt, but a lot more friendly and flexible. I rented a car from Reykjavík Cars (www.reykjavikcars.com). Also heard a lot of good things about Cars Iceland (www.carsiceland.com)

I would strongly advise against using Sixt. I'm a US expat, working in the Netherlands. In 2013, I rented a car from Sixt-Amsterdam for 12 months (had to change it a few times, per their rules). I paid them over 13K euros during this period. When I returned one of the cars, they said that I had to pay 500 euros damage because there were scuffs on the bumper. They claim that I signed a form saying I took responsibility for the damage, and I absolutely did not. They sent photos of the scuffs, and they are there. I dispute that I caused the scuffs and that 500 euros is a reasonable damage claim for a scuffed bumper. I have had many email communications with Sixt on this, and they have likely sent this to a collections agency. On another occasion, I was told that a stone had nicked the hood and I would have to pay for that as well, but I never received paperwork on that. I believe that Sixt uses these outrageous damage claims as an additional revenue stream. Be careful . . .

Unfortunately a similar experience to nickmacv, with Sixt in Spain (Malaga). After a five day rental we returned the car, and soon afterwards received an email suggesting we had damaged three of the hubcaps (on opposite sides of the car, not sure how we'd manage this) and with a 160€ charge. Not a pleasant experience after having taken care of the car and used secure parking. We raised an objection but were told just to get on and pay the invoice. We've subsequently done this, but won't use Sixt again. Perhaps just an issue with that one agency in Spain but enough to turn us off.

It is so interesting that the only bad complaints are from one time posters, and the regulars for the most part had positive results.

I am going to give them a try in Icleland, Norway and France in the Fall and will report back. Hopefully all will go well.

We've had good experiences with sixt in Germany. Many weeks of rentals (150 weeks at least). N9 issues.

DH worked near waldorf for 5 years spending 3 weeks/month there for 10-11 months each year. Sixt was his "go to" car rental for both business and when our boys and i visited. He "commuted" as they were in high school and uprooting was not advisable.

Had a great experience with Sixt in Florence. We booked the cheapest car and were upgraded to a B class Mercedes. They also let us park in the rental car lot at night so we didn't have to pay for parking.

Have hired from Sixt many times in Dublin airport, but will never do so again after appalling service on Christmas Eve. When I drove from the car rental office onto the motorway, messages started flashing up on the dashboard that there was insufficient air in the front tyre, and I needed to take immediate action. After picking up my husband around 20 minutes later we headed to a garage, and filled the tyre with air. Then the car wouldn't start. No response from Sixt on Christmas Eve, so I called the roadside assistance number on the rental agreement. The AA arrived, and advised the battery was completely flat (about an hour after I hired the car). Even though none of this was remotely my fault, Sixt have changed me £148 fir the AA call out, and continue to blame me. I would steer well clear of this dreadful company.

I ended up renting from Reykjavík Cars (www.reykjavikcars.com). Super easy to work with and when I emailed there about some dents I hadn't seen when getting the car, the comment was,"It's only a car." ;)

My brother reserved a SITX car in Tampa FL, and we got a new Volvo for the three days at a good price. The agent persuaded my brother to add the daily toll charge -- which turned out to be a very good deal -- and added me as a driver for a reasonable amount. No funny business, though of course we inspected it carefully before we drove off, and took a photo of small scratch.

We were very pleased with the car, and checking it back in was easy. A pleasant young man stood outside with a clipboard so we didn't even have to go inside.

The shuttle car driver and a desk man steered us to a fun Cuban restaurant that we ended up visiting on both ends of the trip.

I rented a car recently in Hanover, Germany. I have status with Hertz and Avis but chose Sixt because I have used them before in Europe, there cars are generally much better on the higher end and they are priced much better than anyone else. I signed up for a "3" series or similar BMW for approximately 242.95 EUR for 4 days.

I know a little bit of German...however that may have been my undoing. I ended up with a bill that reflected (among other increase charges that I did NOT agree to): A Car upgrade and Insurance. The car, which they gracefully told me was an alternative to the 3 series was a 4 series GT. Great car. I've owned a 7 series and an M3 so I am familiar with this line. Secondly, I NEVER EVER add insurance to any of my rentals (this is why I have my own policy to begin with). When I received my bill a week later they added an "upgrade" and all insurance. The bill was now 679.25 EUR. Are you kidding me? I have called and gotten somewhat of an automated "I am sorry response so far". Car was great. The young professional at the counter was great. The bill is a complete rip-off. Be very careful about what is said and what you may sign. I have not finished yet but will let you know. Alles gutes!

I rented a sixt car for my trip to Austria at the Munich Airport. All was well until the car we rented (eco diesel) started flashing the ad-blue sign. The car told us (literally) that if we didn't add more ad-blue in the next 50km the car would not start again. I contacted sixt, and they told me they were sorry that the ad-blue was not re-filled before the car was given to us. Told me to re-fill myself and keep the receipt for reimbursement. This is the were the problems started. Turns out while trying to track down some of this ad-blue stuff I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere and have since received 2 tickets. Sixt has so far charged me 100 Euros for just mediating correspondence from the local autorities in Austria. I will pay my fees, but for each email they send me, they automatically charge my creditcard on file 25 euros! only on the 4th email did I receive any useful information on how to pay my ticket. I have also sent 3 requests for reimbursements for my ad-blue purchase, but they have not even bothered replying. Car was great and cheap, but given all the hassle dealing with them after the fact, I would NOT recommend renting from Sixt. I guess this is why they can be cheap up front since they make it up on bogus fees and broken promises. Stay away from Sixt.

Listen, our last car rental in 2013 in Spain with Hertz was awful.

It can happen with any of these car rental agencies.

With Sixt we had a good experience twice in Portugal and Germany.

With Europ Car we had a bad experience.

While we have only rented cars for 27 of our trips to Europe, most have been OK.

Budget in Ireland was terrific, as they refunded us for un used gas--unbelievable.

Rented from SixT via Priceline for pickup at Seattle/Tacoma (SeaTac) for a four-day rental. The SixT ad and the email confirmation both state that a guaranteed car model, one of two, will be provided, in my case, a BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class car in their "L" class (Luxury class). Once I arrived to pick up my car, they informed me that not only do they not have one of the car models they "guaranteed", but apparently they had no cars available in that class at all. All they had was an Audi A3, a smaller car from the lesser P-car (premium) category, which I was given with a take-it-or-leave it option and attitude, with no offer of an upgrade to a class above the class of the guaranteed model I reserved (as is customary with most rental car companies when the class of car you reserved is not available) or any offer of compensation. The agent stated in a cavalier manner that this is a common occurrence and that SixT does this all the time. After my trip, I reported this to the Better Business Bureau, asking that SixT stop advertising “guaranteed model” in their ads when they cannot provide a guaranteed model, let alone a car from the same class. They did, only after receiving my complaint from the BBB, adjust my bill to reflect the class of car I was forced to take – and acted like charging me for what I actually received was some sort of compensation. SixT also sent me a voucher for a free upgrade on my next rental – like that will ever happen. Subsequently they sent me a voucher for a whopping - wait for it - $5.00 on my next rental. In my complaint I stated that the money was never the issue, but their bait-and-switch tactics, and their false advertising. SixT stated in their BBB rebuttal that they don’t advertise “guaranteed model” only “guaranteed class”. At this point I upload both the SixT ad from Priceline (which at the time of this review is still actively stating “guaranteed model”), and a copy of my email invoice to the BBB website to supplement my complaint. The Priceline ad states “Luxury Car
One of These Models is Guaranteed: Mercedes-Benz C-Class or BMW 3 Series” and the invoice states “Car type: Mercedes-Benz C-Class or BMW 3 Series - Model guaranteed”. Ignoring all the evidence to the contrary, the BBB closed the complaint, saying that SixT has stated its position. SixT promises the world, and gives you what they have available. Rent from SixT? You decide…

I had the worst experience with Sixt during the 35 years of renting cars while travelling and would NEVER recommend their service.

1.First and foremost, there were "hidden costs" that h ad not been mentioned during the booking period. I had to pay extra for the navigator and for the insurance that made the 'competitive" price close to the price of the decent companies whose service i enjoyed before dealing with Sixt.

2. Despite the fact that I contacted the office twice (!) on the phone a month and 48 hrs before picking up the car and was assured that the car will be equipped with the navigator it was not equipped and it took me additional time to persuade the staff to give me the car with the navigator.

3. The car was extremely dirty both inside and outside. Basing on what happened when I was returning the car it was durty on purpose, so that I would not notice the sligt damage on one of the doors.

4. Whem I was returning the car the staff member managed to find a tiny "damage" on the passenger door (the "damage" was less than a millimeter in diameter) and claimed that I should pay for re-painting the whole door. It was ridiculous.

5. Next day I got an email from the manager in which he claimed that I should pay not o nly for the "damage" that never occurred but also "for 2 days, when the car will not be rented out (during the repair of the door)"!

All that is ridiculous and non-professional.

We rented a car in Sixt in Reykjavik while we have our round trip in Iceland (http://www.my-travel-experience.com/...d_for_15_days/) in 2013
I could say only good things about this company. Staff was very kind for us (we have booked the car using website http://www.economycarrentals.com/ as it was cheaper that using official site)
We forgot our driving license at Ukraine and the girl on the reception helped us to change booking though we didn't pay for the days while we were waiting for our driving license.
After this man from Sixt drove us to the campsite in Reykjavik and all the way he tried to be so cheerful as he saw we were in despair.

I travel three to five times a month and rent cars all of the time. I tried SixT recently. The car was delivered with 1/2 a tank of gas. That was noted on the receipt by the attendant who delivered the car. I dropped the car off with 3/4ths of a tank and pointed out to the attendant that I rented it with half a tank and showed her the notation. She apparently ignored me. The bill just showed up. $64 for fuel plus $12 for a GPS that was built into the car (but I didn't use). Of course, no answer at customer service. Congratulations SixT: you just lost a potential customer who would have rented in the thousands of dollars with you every year over $76 in bogus charges. Bush league. And please, you rumpswabs who probably work for SixT and monitor these posts and post responses, spare us your nonsense. This is not excusable.

Hi
I just discovered a site on which you can review (and check reviews) for rentalcars.
Just posted my first review on Rentalcars.
Will post some oters, including some praise for Sixt - never had any problem (mostly in Germany).

https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/ren...c-2a70f20d5470

Worldweary, I'd advise to pursue, SIXT is a very big company, they cannot know all the fuck-ups that happen here or there and are not corrected by local agencies.

A few years back we rented from Sixt in Nice. When we returned the car an agent actually inspected it and then signed off on the rental form showing that there was no damage.

Hertz was a different story.

koneman, baltvilks, worldweary, jrmf, to name the most recent: their one and only fodors posts have been sixt slams. Creative and varied, but suspicious.
