There is a bit of Sorrento on this day but I did want to share the view. Also, the ferry ride across the Straits of Messina was amazing. This does it for Sicily. Thanks for squinting along.

Well, I forgot to post the bus ride from Palermo to Siracusa. I wrote earlier that we wanted to stay in Catania--it should have read Taormina where we couldn't find rooms in our price range. I'll be curious to read what the landscape is like in 2020.

We find our hotel, unpack and get adopted by another taxi driver.

From lunch we walk to the Piazza Duomo where sprucing up is going on. BTW, we thought we'd be smart to get our travelers checks in Euros. It caused all sorts of head scratching in the bank in Siracusa. Bank manager had to call our bank, or Cooks, I can't remember. We bought a small ink drawing on papyrus--it is framed in my guest bath where I contemplate it often.

DH (Rhody) loved to watch the local TV shows. Especially loved ads. As you travel to Sicily today, I'll read fervently about how things have changed....or not!

TDudette, thanks again for sharing your trip. Brings back wonderful memories of my own and Im glad to see what a great trip you enjoyed!

The thing that is most remarkable to me is how empty all the major sites are!! Really empty. When I visited in 2013 these amazing places were fairly busy with visitors and tour groups. Based on reports of the huge increase in tourism in just the last few years, its hard to imagine how much more its changed since my trip.

Unfortunately everything has changed again in just the last month, but I hope recovery comes soon and quickly.

And thank you, Dayle for following along. Until Rhody's illness, our big trip was always in March. Prices were lower and crowds were often composed of school groups. I think the huge cruise ships made a horrid difference.

I hope your big trip can happen asap.

I just love this! I really miss the old-style travel scrapbooks! Now that we do it all digitally, it's just not the same. There's something so much more personal about placing photos and memorabilia in a book.

Of course, I CAN still do it, but why would I?

Well that was fun! I just went through this from top to bottom and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very nice. Thanks.

Sicily was one of my favorite trips - thanks for the memories!

TDudette Mar 22nd, 2020 11:33 AM

It was easier to weave tickets and such in the scrapbooks for sure progol.

Thank you all for the kind words.
