mikelg - I'd love to make it to Bilbao (mostly to the guggenheim), but I'm not sure I can make it this trip. I am planning on making a day trip out towards Getaria though.

annhig - Good to hear you liked SS! I've spent summers in FL and figured the rain in SS was probably similar. Nice mornings, and a heavy rain by the afternoon. I felt a lot of reassurance when kimhe said to worry about the rain though :)

macdogmom - thanks for the blog! It looks really interesting, and I love it posts pictures with descriptions of the pinxtos. It'll great to study up on, since we don't speak much basque!

The predominantly afternoon and often, sudden and heavy rainshowers add to the San Sebastián experience. People gather under the archways and rush into bars, and from one minute to another the atmosphere changes completely, and often in very good ways.

I have another question! In regards to getting to San Sebastian. Our flight lands in Biarritz on July 31st at 8PM. I was originally planning on doing a train from Biarritz to Irun to SS.. but the last train leaves at 9:01PM... which does not seem like a lot of time to get our bags and get a taxi to the train station. Does anyone know of alternative options to get to SS?

I doubt if Biarritz airport is so vast that an hour will not be enough time to get your train to SS, but why not spend the night in Biarritz? I've never been but the name conjures up images of gracious living.

you have a week in SS so one night will hardly be missed. Have a nice french dinner, walk along the beach and watch the sunset, go for a midnight swim...then catch the train in the morning.

Don't plan on too many daytrips outside San Sebastian, maybe Getaria. San Sebastian is incredible you won't want to leave, 5 days will go by quickly.

Hotel Niza (see above for great restaurant in hotel) is on the beach and great location for walking to the old town. We stayed in May for 3 nights and loved it.

Yesterday, San Sebastián was elected to be European Cultural Capital in 2016 :)
