Yes, it was a bit heavy and precluded the need for lunch. I didn't buy a tin of schneeballen to take home (although it was an option), but I was glad I tried one. The one I tried was covered in powdered sugar and had some kind of champagne filling, which might have helped.

I think the Rothenburgers used Schneeballs as back up cannon balls during the 30 years war. What you see on the shelves are the leftovers. Truly blech!

My wife bought one. I had a (small) bite. It was somewhat like eating Styrofoam.

LBK, is that like a hot dog? I could eat a hot dog for bkfst, once in a while. Dutch, LOL. Tomboy, I think I will pass on the styrophoam. Delaine, at least you tried one!

Judy,

the Weißwurst is a bit more common in upper Bavaria and esp. in and around Munich than in Rothenburg. Though you will probably also get some there.

It's not so much a real breakfast but more a snack, traditionally for the a.m. hours between breakfast and lunch.

Actually, it's not even a tradition to eat them before noon (and not 11am, by the way), but had been a necessity since the sausages got invented in pre-refrigerator times and had been made from fresh meat every day.

Nowadays, you can get them any time of the day.
They get boiled like hotdogs, but are made from veal with many herbs and a twist of lemon. They taste quite good, actually, but different than a hotdog.

The only thing you have to keep in mind is that you do NOT eat the skin.

Judy - you have to try a schneeball once. It's a rite of passage for Rothenburg.

Just another opinion on the Schneeball... my wife just had to try them. We bought 2, we each took a bite and tossed them in the nearest refuse can.

Unfortunately, I'm the type of person that even (especially) if I recieved so many negative comments on the schneeball before going, I would have tried them just to satisfy my own curiosity.

When we stayed at Eisenhut a few years ago there was an excellent bakery/coffee shop directly across the street from the main entry. That is where we went.
