Rothenburg Breakfasts?
I just learned our great rate at the Eisenhut does not include breakfast :-(. It was Expedia's mistake and I received a 44$ credit on our charge. The Eisenhut's bkfst is 17 Euros. I would never pay that for bkfst. Where else can we go for bkfst and coffee?
McDonalds maybe? :-)
Perhaps you could try Cafe Lupe - Galgengasse 13 or one of the bakeries.
Our hotel did provide breakfast, so I did not try Cafe Lupe. It is a Lonely Planet recommendation. |
I would check out the hotel breakfast, it may be enough to keep you fueled until dinner with maybe a brat mid-afternoon!!!
Some breakfasts I've had in German hotels have been incredible spreads but like you, I don't usually bother if it's extra and expensive. |
No McDonalds in Rothenburg.
Pick up something at a bakery. And a banana at the grocery store. Maybe a cup of coffee somewhere. Best breakfast and cheap.
Most bakeries offer coffee and other hot drinks as well as rolls with salami, cheese, bacon... in different varieties, either to take away or to consume in the shop. This will be the cheapest version.
If you want more comfortable seating, check out the cafes, which usually have a breakfast menu. |
No McD, but BK near the station ;-)
I was looking through some sites and found his shot of Rothenburg's McDs. Well at least I will have some good coffee. Cafes sound good too.http://www.thrall3.com/thrallville/g...r%20tauber.htm
The McD closed several years ago due to the high increase in their lease. Those pictures were from 1999.
scatcat, thanks for heads up on that! LOL,,I could just see my DH trying to go to that McDs! Cafe Lupe sounds good.
I tried, but I can't contain myself.
Why go to Rothenburg in search of a McDonald's? GIVE IT UP!!!! You're in Germany---eat like a German. If not, why not just circle over Poughkeepsie for 9 hours, then when you land, have some grits and sausage gravy? |
Hi Judy. 17E isn't that bad for breakfast at the Eisenhut. It will be about the best breakfast in town. If you just want some pastries and coffee, there are a number of them around.
The cafe at the Burg-Hotel might be a less cost alternative. I bet you are getting excited, eh? Did the McD's really close? It was there three years ago. (Not that I ate there, but it was a cute kind of place with a medieval golden arches out front.) |
Tomboy, I am not a big bkfst fan, esp one with heavy meats and such. I prefer yoghurt, toast and coffee. Dutch, thanks dear, I appreciate the sentiments. I am getting very excited. I LOVE to travel, and Germany looks wonderful!
17 € is way too much to pay for a breakfast. I seldom pay that much for a dinner. Many cafes offer a breakfast menu. Go to Rothenburgs tourist board site and I bet you will find many places. This is a tourist town after all and businesses are set up to cash in on tourists. Breakfast is one thing that lots of people want, so I wouldn't be too concerned about finding a place. Coffee is generally excellent anywhere you go in Germany. Enjoy the bakeries and the fresh pastries and brotchen.
Mainhattengirl, I agree with the 17 Euro for bkfst?! Yikes! I am glad they have good coffee there, I love my good coffee :-).
I stayed at the Eisenhut in 2007. As I recall, breakfast there was fine and plentiful--not as good as the Westin Grand in Berlin, for example, but not nearly as expensive either. If you eat a lot at breakfast, I would eat at the hotel. Otherwise, there are multiple bakeries/pastry shops within a 5 minute or less walk from the Eisenhut, which is located in the center of the old area of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. You could even try a Rothenburger Schneeball (you'll have to see one for yourself when you get there).
Delaine, thanks for the info. I read about the schneeballs...a bit heavy, yes?
Not exactly heavy, just ghastly.
It's more like chewing on a sample pastry that had been made from whatever for display only. If brave enough to try, have any kind of beverage in reach. And don't buy everyone in your party one Schneeball, but only one and share. Saves lots of money since noone will want more. |
Have a good weisswurst mit senf and an early liter of bier; but remember must be before 11:00a.m....tradition!!!
Yes, it was a bit heavy and precluded the need for lunch. I didn't buy a tin of schneeballen to take home (although it was an option), but I was glad I tried one. The one I tried was covered in powdered sugar and had some kind of champagne filling, which might have helped.
I think the Rothenburgers used Schneeballs as back up cannon balls during the 30 years war. What you see on the shelves are the leftovers. Truly blech!
My wife bought one. I had a (small) bite. It was somewhat like eating Styrofoam.
LBK, is that like a hot dog? I could eat a hot dog for bkfst, once in a while. Dutch, LOL. Tomboy, I think I will pass on the styrophoam. Delaine, at least you tried one!
Judy,
the Weißwurst is a bit more common in upper Bavaria and esp. in and around Munich than in Rothenburg. Though you will probably also get some there. It's not so much a real breakfast but more a snack, traditionally for the a.m. hours between breakfast and lunch. Actually, it's not even a tradition to eat them before noon (and not 11am, by the way), but had been a necessity since the sausages got invented in pre-refrigerator times and had been made from fresh meat every day. Nowadays, you can get them any time of the day. They get boiled like hotdogs, but are made from veal with many herbs and a twist of lemon. They taste quite good, actually, but different than a hotdog. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that you do NOT eat the skin. |
Judy - you have to try a schneeball once. It's a rite of passage for Rothenburg.
Just another opinion on the Schneeball... my wife just had to try them. We bought 2, we each took a bite and tossed them in the nearest refuse can.
Unfortunately, I'm the type of person that even (especially) if I recieved so many negative comments on the schneeball before going, I would have tried them just to satisfy my own curiosity. Paul |
When we stayed at Eisenhut a few years ago there was an excellent bakery/coffee shop directly across the street from the main entry. That is where we went.
