Room with bath - how do I shampoo?

I'm a little embarassed to be asking this question but here goes: I've booked a twin-bedded room for my daughter and myself in Paris. Small 22 room hotel in the 6th. Their twin rooms only come with a bath, not a shower. Do Parisian hotel rooms with baths usually have a spray hose attachment so that we can shampoo easily? (I don't think the hotel's knowledge of English would allow them to answer this question.) Many thanks.

Jayelle Mar 26th, 2002 04:59 PM

Kim,<BR> Yes, most Paris hotels have the hand-held spray attachment in the bathtub. You should have no problem washing your hair, but unless you're seated in the tub, expect to get some water on the floor. Usually only the larger hotels have a tub with a fixed shower attachment and shower curtain.

Brenda Mar 26th, 2002 05:03 PM

If there is no spray attachment, wash your hair in the bathwater and then put your head under the faucet to rinse. That's how I did it before showers were common.

Don Mar 26th, 2002 05:05 PM

I have been to Paris 5 times. I stayed in small hotels and B&Bs. All of the places I stayed had showers.

sam Mar 26th, 2002 05:06 PM

Kim,<BR>I am sorry to tell you this but you will not be able to wash your hair during your stay in Paris. If I were you I would take a couple of hats for you and your daughter. If it gets reaally gross and stinky then you might be able to get the kitchen staff to let you use their big sink( I did this once after a late night bender when some drunken bloke spritzed me with champagne and blew clove cigarette smoke right into my newly coiffed do). I think the appropriate response would be to find a raspbery beret for you and the little lass and glam up up during your stay.<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR>Sam

ja Mar 26th, 2002 05:41 PM

Hi, Kim,<BR> Sorry, but I had to giggle a bit at your question. I grew up in a row house with no shower - we either washed our hair in the tub and rinsed it under the faucet, as Brenda suggests, or else in the kitchen sink. It's amazing how much we come to depend on our "mod. con"s, eh?<BR>ja

joyce Mar 26th, 2002 06:26 PM

What hotel are you staying at? I am looking for a cheap hotel so would appreciate any info. I am also travelling with my daughter so would have similar hair washing problems!!!

tom Mar 26th, 2002 10:31 PM

my God - please be a troll. Anyone who doesn't know how to wash her hair w/o a shower is way too dumb to go to Europe on her own.

Christina Mar 27th, 2002 11:07 AM

I have never been in any hotel which did not have either a regular shower or a spray attachment with the tub. But I have been in a lot of French hotels, so they all have regardless of price level. They do like to rinse themselves off, also. I have had quite a few hotels in France with showers (meaning a head mounted on wall or there was a place for the head to be set on the wall) with either doors or curtains and none were large hotels nor expensive, maybe I'm just lucky.

geez Mar 27th, 2002 11:38 AM

I'm with Tom on this one. If not a troll, Kim better stay home. The hotel might have stairs instead of an elevator ("How do I get from one floor to another if the hotel doesn't have an elevator?").

Ohno Mar 27th, 2002 11:43 AM

Wait until she hears what the French ladies really use the hand held shower nozzles for, ooo la la.

flexible Mar 27th, 2002 11:51 AM

Bend over. Stick head under faucet. Wet hair, shampoo. Stick head under faucet. Rinse. Repeat as needed.<BR>Maybe now we understand why lots of people in Europe aren't fat?

get real Mar 27th, 2002 12:02 PM

wash it in a puddle on outside, or stand in the rain.

europeanwoman Mar 27th, 2002 12:10 PM

Kim: Go the hairdresser in Paris and get a new cut (with a shampoo, of course). Quite an experience. And he/she will be able to tell you all about the trendiest restaurants and places.

Puzzled Mar 27th, 2002 12:14 PM

Pardon my ignorance, but what do the French ladies use the shower spray for?<BR>What I think it is? The v___r word?

I've tried it and it's delightful, especially the Power Jet setting.

Wowie Mar 27th, 2002 01:08 PM

T Mar 28th, 2002 10:47 AM

Kim, you should be embarrassed. What adult does not know how to figure out something this simple? How have you made it through life so far? Ask your daughter, she probably has more sense than you do.

Kim asks a simple question. Some of you think it's a silly question. Fine, you are entitled to your opinion, but I don't get why you think it gives you license to be snide and nasty in response. <BR><BR>What is the point? Does it make you feel superior, or do you just enjoy putting people down when you think they "deserve" it (or "ask for" it) because they pose a question that seems obvious to you? <BR><BR>Do you think the notion of having this board be kind and civil is just some ridiculous idea put forth by "losers" (meaning people not willing to be insulting at any available opportunity)?<BR><BR>

xxx Mar 28th, 2002 04:37 PM

Alot of hullabaloo over nothing. Use the Bidet for god sakes!!!!!!

Mary Sue Mar 28th, 2002 04:51 PM

Liz, <BR>I did think it was a kind of silly question but so what. I agree with you 100 %! <BR><BR>To all of you that had to be so mean to Kim, did you ever hear the statement that "There's no stupid question?" Did you all have teacher's in grade school that made fun of you when you asked a silly question? Let's be a bit more kind and try to help people out here. <BR><BR>Kim, have a great time in Paris!!!<BR><BR>

geez Mar 29th, 2002 05:40 AM

true address: You are assuming this was a legitimate post. Should trolls be treated well?<BR>Mary Sue: We aren't in grade school, or at least I'm not. Even if there are no stupid questions, there clearly exists questions that any idiot could answer.

hypocrite Mar 29th, 2002 05:56 AM

True Address: Well, why aren't you using your true address then, if you don't like anonymity?

trueaddress Mar 29th, 2002 06:01 AM

geez,<BR><BR>Maybe I'm living in a dream world, but there were no trolls way back in the dark ages when this forum was good. And what makes you think this is a troll, anyway. Even though the question may seem stupid to you, maybe it's a valid one for Kim. Those who have not traveled in Europe have heard all kinds of stories about how things are different "over there", and many of my intelligent friends who are not avid European travelers like myself have said things that have led me to believe that they don't think the 21st century or even the 20th century has yet to arrive in Western Europe. It's not that they're Ugly Americans or stupid people. It's just that we Americans for the most part, are not made aware of cultures outside of our own, a fault of our educational system and in part, because the US is geographically so large and it's easy to live a large chunk of your life without visiting Europe or places in Asia, Africa, etc. This is a travel board to give and receive information. If you feel Kim is a troll, simply do not answer her post and it will quickly fall into cyberspace.

Kim Mar 29th, 2002 04:48 PM

I thought I had asked a legitimate question, "Do Parisian hotel rooms with baths usually have a spray hose attachment so that we can shampoo easily?" Of course I would know to use the faucet or the sink if a hose attachment were not available, but I was just asking. I'm truly surprised at the number of unkind remarks to such an honest request. Thank you to those readers who answered my question in kind.

TryThis Mar 29th, 2002 05:58 PM

Kim - <BR><BR>I see 2 things in your post that may have set people off:<BR><BR>1) The title of your post suggests you would not know what to do - it sounds like this was an innocent miscommunication.<BR><BR>2) No one has mentioned this, but there seems to perhaps be some "Ugly American" in your post - again, I'm sure it's unintentional. First, it sounds like you haven't even tried asking the hotel. You simply assume that no one on the entire staff could answer this question in English, when you haven't even tried. Secondly, you appear not to have even considered asking in French. - you simply lay the problem at the hotel's feet by presuming their knowledge of English is "insufficient." How about taking a stab at learning some French? People regularly post questions here about how to ask questions, etc in another language. I'm no French buff, but I'm sure someone here could help you. Good luck and have a wonderfule trip.

TryThis Mar 29th, 2002 06:01 PM

sorry for that typo at the end :)

Kim Mar 30th, 2002 06:58 AM

Dear Try This: Thank you for the tips.

Beenthere Mar 30th, 2002 07:38 AM

Just returned from Paris a few weeks ago and the hotel, an upscale hotel,I stayed in only advertised a bath, not a shower. The bath did, in fact, include a hand held shower though I was not worried about it. I think from your post you are unfortunately setting yourself and your daughter up to be helpless females in a foreign country if you cannot imagine that Paris, a cosmopolitan thriving city would not have a normal up-to-date bathroom situation. Did you think you were traveling to some primitive desolate badlands that is out of touch with the modern world. What's worse, as TryThis pointed out, you already would not deign to request information of those, you assumed, stupid french hotel clerks who would not know how to deal with an intelligent american traveler. Do what you would do in US when booking a hotel. If you need info, ask. You'd be surprised how well some french people speak english or if they can't are, ohmigod, bright enough to find someone who can. If I were you, I'd break out the french phrase book now and start practicing. Your question unfortunately deserved what it got as you are starting out on your trip already "ugly". Check the attitude with your luggage! I hope your daughter isn't learning to travel as arrogantly. I do actually hope you are a troll, not a real live ugly American.

Mary Sue Mar 30th, 2002 11:01 AM

Geez Louise,<BR><BR>I didn't say anyone was now in grade school now. I asked a question about, WHEN YOU WERE in grade school. Were you sick on the day they taught <BR>"Past Tense" in English class? <BR><BR>I don't think I would call someone with a question I thought had an easy answer an idiot either. <BR><BR>Kim, just remember most people are nice and a joy to be with, but a few have frustrated lives and like to make others feel that way too. <BR><BR>Geez Louise, Have a nice day :o) Smile.<BR>Happy Easter,<BR><BR>Kim, I'm sure you will have not problem washing your hair. Go with the flow.<BR><BR>Mary Sue
