Sis is currently studying museum studies and is waiting to hear on a few internships for the summer and fall. When she gets in, I'll let you know where! (Fingers crossed, she's got the passion like you wouldn't believe!)

Is your sis in Boston as well? Is it a degree with the MFA? I'm just curious - I assume it is very difficult to become a docent? And I've heard that many museums don't pay docents - they're doing it voluntarily as their interest.

I am coming in even later on your thread, but I really enjoyed reading it. I have not traveled much and never by myself, but it is a secret fantasy of mine to do exactly what you did. I am so envious.
I am going to Rome in Feb. 2008 w/ 3 others and I am also going to copy your report to use to help organize that trip. I really appreciated your feedback on the Parlamento and on the private Vatican tour. I was in Rome May 2007 and our experience in the Vatican was similar to your Carravaggio; the guide, bless his heart, was really passionate about the subject so that we spent 60 minutes standing in the heat in the courtyard; subsequently when we got to the Sistine Chapel, the guards immediately made us exit. So we literally walked into and out of it in less than 3 minutes.
Also, your list of reading materials (and others contributions)is great. I am definitely going to get those and read before we go.
My trip to Rome was by accident. I was only going because my dad "had always wanted to go", but he had health issues and at the last minute couln't. Wow..I got bit so hard by the Rome bug that all my friends and family are getting kinda bored with my Rome obsession.

My first reaction in reading your post was envy & jealousy then a sense of deja vu & finally admiration for your planning, the trip itself & the pithiness of your report(too often, reports tend to be long-winded w/too many minor details). We did a similar trip in October 2006 & went for the art & the history.I planned it for over a year & read extensively(a labor of love). We also used Context in Rome, Pompeii & Florence & visited numerous churches-I did not see a mention of San Clemente which was a highlight for us as it has 3 levels, the last dating back to the 1st Century;when you go back, add it to your list. Thank you for transporting me back to Rome for a few minutes.

Amy I loved your report but am quite shocked that they allowed you to take photos in the Sistine Chapel. Is that a perk you get with the tour???
