Rome: Domus Aurea to close for 2yrs

Too bad I missed it! Thanks for the info, Walter.
|
I'm not at all surprised. I've toured there twice (in 1999 and 2004) and the amount of damage sustained by the paintings during that five year pd shocked me--Damage from water, humidity, and tourists' breathing (CO2). I remember one painting in particular that was freshly discovered and beautifully preserved in 1999 and was running-down-the-wall illegible in 2004.
I'm glad I've had my shot(s) already! I have a feeling it will end up being longer than 2 yrs... |
Thanks PL for that news. It was on my "to do" list for March. Oh well.
|
How sad that I, too, will miss this! However, just another reason to travel to Rome again! Thanks for the heads-up, Walter.

Newsweek article about the lack of money for the ancient monuments.

How sad. Makes one want to go quickly back and see everything one can before more sites shut down. But the implications for posterity are chilling.
|
Does anybody else know anything about this?
|
It's OK. I already looked it up.

I just came across this article http://www.guardian.co.uk/italy/stor...833952,00.html
They are now saying 3yrs (yea right :) ) but what was interesting is that they plan to excavate the ruins, waterproof the Domus and then backfill it with soil. Regards, Walter |
