Restaurant suggestion Bamberg
 

We, a group of four women, will arrive in Bamberg after an overnight flight from the US, and a train journey from Munich.

We'll arrive on a Saturday in early December, which, in my limited Bamberg experience, can be extremely busy.

I think it might be wise to book our first night's dinner in advance, so we don't have to worry about searching for a restaurant with availability on the night of.

Any suggestions for restaurants that serve good Franconian/Bavarian food (and take bookings), would be greatly appreciated.

We'll be staying at the Best Western Bamberg, which is walking distance from the train station and Old Town, so somewhere within walking distance of either would be ideal.

There are a coupe of well-known old fashioned beer halls. I think we ate in the Hofbräu. Cash only.

Mel - I don't think that we had great success in finding places to eat in Bamberg - insufficient research I think. I do remember the breakfast at the Best Western being good and they have free tea and coffee in the lobby. There was a sushi restaurant opposite [and something that looked like a massage parlour] neither of which we patronised.

I'll look forward to your response Florida. My husband and I ate Italian and Indian when we were last in Bamberg, but this group wants German, at least until they get tired of it, which I'm sure they will before the week is out.

I'm thinking Zum Sterna might fit the bill, seven minute walk from our hotel and great reviews.

If you look for some typical local, I'd go to the Spezial Brauerei Gasthof. It's like Schlenkerla (which I'd avoid) but not as crowded and hectic but a real Franconian inn:

SCHLENKERLA - if you don't have the onion, you have not been to Bamberg.

An onion stuffed with meatloaf? Hmmm.

And topped with a slab of bacon, and soaking in rauchbier sauce, and with the creamiest potatoes I have ever eaten snuggled up alongside it all?

Hi Mel - we are back from Germany and am reporting back on our Bamberg restaurants. We were there two nights and ate at Spezial one night - had Wiener schnitzel which was good, along with a smoked beer. We made a reservation that afternoon for the same evening, so know they take bookings.

Second day we made a reservation by stopping in at Schlenkerla, so they do take reservations as well. I had the onion, which are like large meatballs wrapped in onion, and were very tasty. I can't remember what DH had - probably Weiner schnitzel again, lol. Also had their smoked beer. We aren't huge beer drinkers normally, but enjoyed the smoked beer in Bamberg.

Where else in Germany will you go?

Most places I looked at only take reservations by phone, so I will just wait until we get there.

We've discussed stopping in Nuremburg on the way to Bamberg (assuming we feel human after our overnight flight) so I decided against trying to book a place in Bamberg for that particular night anyway.

Good to know we can book the day of though, as we'll be there three nights. I've made a short list of possibilities, your suggestions included.

We'll also be spending two nights in Rothenburg ob Tauber - our hotel has a lovely restaurant - I've stayed and eaten there before - but unfortunately they're closed Mon and Tue nights, which are the nights we're there. I'm sure we'll manage though.

We'll also be spending a few nights in Munich - my husband will be joining us towards the end of the girl's trip - he's already looking forward to meals at Hacker Pschorr and Goa, but if you have any suggestions for other options in Munich or Augsburg, I'd love to hear them.

Sounds like a great trip! No suggestions for Munich (last there in 1989) or Augsburg (haven't been there yet), but if you end up in Nuremberg, I can recommend the restaurant Hutt'n.

I wanted to get to Rothenburg on this trip, but couldn't squeeze it in. We also went to Wurzburg on this trip.

Hope you don't mind my input here --

For Munich -- didn't you tell me about Zum Alten Markt? Since I heard about it, I've eaten there several times and like it a lot. If it wasn't you, you should consider it for a meal.

If you ever need some fast food or something on the go, try the Ringlers sandwich shop on Sendlingerstrasse. It's fabulous. I went there a few times when I was in Munich for a Goethe course, and there always was a line.

In Augsburg, I like the Bauerntanze, almost as much for the location (in the midst of the romantic canals) as for the food.

I agree that the Bauertanz [sic] is the best traditional inn in the center of Augsburg. For Italian food I'd recommend the Dragone at Wintergasse 3 (http://www.ristorante-pizzeria-dragone.de/), a simple pizzeria with hearty dishes, which is at it's place since 1976 (well, interior dating from that area, too). Not to be confused with another Italian restaurant of the same name outside the center.

One thing I forgot to mention re Augsburg: the station is a huge construction site presently (well, I'd call it a ruin) - no elevators, no escalators, no anything... So if you have people with mobility issues in your company contact 0180 6 512 512 for help the day before your visit.
