Replacement for Hotel Madison
 

I just checked the rates for the Madison, and they are now out of our price range, much as we love the hotel. So--I'd welcome suggestions on comparable hotels in roughtly the same area. Help! We'll be going next October, and since that's still high season need to book rooms soon.

Where? Paris? NYC? Washington DC? or ??

"I" knew where you meant, only because we have stayed at the Madison (Paris). It is wonderful and I'm sad to hear about the rates going up so much. Will be waiting to hear what others have to say in answering your question.
We like to "mix up locations" and try different areas of Paris---but it sounds like you like the St. Germaine area and Left Bank.
I've heard good things about a hotel on Rue Jacob, Hotel du Danube.... and a couple of others across St. Germaine from the Madison and between Deux Magots and the Seine!. OR some like around Rue Buci..not far away. OR some people have suggested the other way from the Madison toward Luxembourg Gardens.

underhill: two others I had forgotten the names of just came to mind when I read a previous post.(but I'm sure you saw those!)
The Hotel Bonaparte and the D'Angleterre....both in the same area. Don't know the prices. PErhaps someone can give you a personal review...I haven't stayed at either , but have researched reviews. AND also the Hotel du Danube mentioned in my previous reply.

We have stayed at the du Danube 7 or 8 times and really like it very much. Do get a superior room though as the standards are very small. I have pictures on my trip advisor review a.d also at Kodak Gallery..I'll look up the url.

We've also stayed at the D'Angleterre on rue Jacob and they have recently remodeled and it looks very nice. There too the superior rooms are quite large. The Millesime superior rooms too are large and comfortable, we've stayed there several times and enjoyed it.

The Hotel Verneuil in the same area has very nice rooms and staff, though we've found most of their rooms are a bit small.

One thing though about the Danube, it is not air conditioned, but we go every year in October and have never needed it.

I don't know how the prices at the Madison compare to those at Le Regent on Rue Dauphine. Perhaps you've stayed at Le Regent, but I think of it as being a small, reasonably affordable hotel, not too far from the Madison. The street is not too busy and adjoins Rue Buci.

We have reservations at Le Regent for May.
We've stayed at Hotel Verneiul and Hotel des Saintes Peres in the past couple of years....would choose the Saints Peres again based on room size, location and friendly staff.

The Saints-Peres looks very nice; does it have its own web site with photos? All I've found so far is its listing in the Guides de Charmes.

For reference, we'll be happy to pay up to 225 Euros per night. The Madison is now 330!!!

I won't stay at the Danube again mainly because of the ice cold reception we got daily and nightly and also the bathroom needed renovating. D'Angleterre is much nicer now than when I first stayed there in 2002. But I don't care for their weird reservation procedure of sending a personal check in this day and age of credit card guarantees. Plus they have a very very strict cancellation policy.

The Verneuil has lovely deluxe double rooms. One of the best is #402 which I have seen. The night manager recommended #502 on the top floor as it has a few large windows. A standard double room will be claustrophobic. The rate of the deluxe double is within your budget.

We stayed at the Hotel Henri IV Rive Gauche in the 5th on rue Saint-Jacques in September. We had a standard room for 162 euros per night. The room was small but the view across the street of the gargoyles on St Severin and the wonderful staff more than made up for the size of the room. The hotel is relatively new. Check out the reviews on Trip Advisor. We plan to stay there again next September.

Isn't the Henri IV Rive Gauche owned by the group that owns Hotel de Lutece? We loved our stay there.
Hotel des Saints Peres does not have a website other than the Esprit de France site that I'm aware of.

Yes, the Henri IV Rive Gauche is owned by the Buffat family who also owns Hotel de Lutece and Hotel des Deux Iles on Ile St. Louis, and the Galileo (8th district).

I stayed at the Hotel de l’Abbaye earlier this month, and loved everything about it except the smallness of the standard rooms. For more detail, see my November 9 review on Tripadvisor.

I paid 199€ per night (which included breakfast) for a standard double by booking on the hotel’s website, www.hotel-abbaye.com. Like the Madison, the l’Abbaye is in the 6th, but it’s farther south – closer to the Luxembourg Gardens than the Boulevard Saint-Germain.

We also stayed in September at the Henri IV Rive Gauche. Loved it! It's in such a fun location and no more than a block from Notre Dame and the Seine. Are planning to stay there on our next trip too. Paid 162 euros for a twin room with a stunning view of St. Severin directly across the street.
