The Muir National Forest just north of San Fran is a great place to hike amongst the giants.

This is an excellent choice and puts you in the SF Bay Area with unlimited
ways to spend your time

Another vote for the Muir Woods just North of San Francisco. Very impressive trees with a high density and a very relaxing atmosphere very close to the city.

However, you might find even more valuable responses if you'd post this on the U.S. Forum.

There are gobs of places to see redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains. Big Basis is really great - there are other parks like Butano and Portola that are good too. Further south, along the Big Sur coast you will find some. Limekiln state park has some good second growth. If you want to see loads of old growth trees, head up to Humboldt County - this might be a little further than you were thinking though.
