Record breaking rain in Paris

Since people planning trips are always asking about the weather, you might want to know that Paris has broken its record for the amount of rain for the month of May with one (rainy) day left. Yesterday alone, we got the equiavalent of one month of rain.

What will this mean for June? Well, the beginning of the month is going to be rainy, too. For the rest: wait and see.

Tulips May 30th, 2016 09:38 PM

It was pretty bad here in Antwerp as well; flooding, traffic mayhem. Lightning struck the tower of the Antwerp cathedral.

MyriamC May 30th, 2016 09:42 PM

Yes, it was pretty bad in the Antwerp area. My plants don't need to be watered for the coming weeks. No floodings in my village, thank god.

sparkchaser May 30th, 2016 10:42 PM

Time to cancel my trip!

Whathello May 30th, 2016 11:51 PM

Hearing the rain on the roof - looks like monsoon.
My trousers think Paris is doing her best to set a new record !

sparkchaser May 30th, 2016 11:53 PM

I Mentioned this to my French coworker and he made a comment regarding dirt and homeless people that I won't repeat here.

hetismij2 May 31st, 2016 12:37 AM

There were four people killed in the flooding in Bavaria Sunday. Plus all those children in Paris and Germany hit by lightning.
It skirted us, we had a heavy shower yesterday evening, with a couple of claps of thunder, but that was all. Further south was badly hit.

Our street floods with heavy rain, being the lowest point in the town, so I am very happy it missed us.

sparkchaser May 31st, 2016 12:49 AM

How many were hit by lightning?

northie May 31st, 2016 02:17 AM

Report here said 17children in Parc Monceau were affected by lightning .

sparkchaser May 31st, 2016 02:30 AM

"affected" does that mean struck by?

sla019 May 31st, 2016 02:40 AM

>There were four people killed in the flooding in Bavaria Sunday. <

This happened in middle Franconia near Ansbach. The Ansbach - Würzburg railway line is still closed. That means that Rothenburg o.d.T. presently is accessible by train from the north only.

bilboburgler May 31st, 2016 02:48 AM

Yorkshire heat wave at 14C continues, children startled

sparkchaser May 31st, 2016 02:50 AM

That's my kind of heat wave!

Whathello May 31st, 2016 03:09 AM

Affected as the group was being struck by lightning and some children making a cardiac stop. Two (?) were reanimated, one is still in a critical condition.

hetismij2 May 31st, 2016 03:20 AM

Lightning strikes: http://www.indiafinancenews.com/chil...ootball-pitch/

The vierdaagse here, and in several other places was cancelled yesterday because of the forecast and the fear of lightning.
The vierdaags is a peculiarly Dutch thing I believe where people walk (or cycle or swim) a set distance every day/evening for four days. The Nijmegen Vierdaagse is the best known and internationally attended, but most towns have them, with schools, scouting groups, and individuals taking part. I assume it will be a driedaagse (three days) here this year. My grandsons are walking it, the 7 year old is doing 5km, the nine year old 10km.

Thunderstorms, rain showers, torrential downpours, and cold weather all over the Dordogne for the foreseeable future. It's almost June and we're still using the fireplaces every night. It's great for sleeping, and we don't have to water the garden, but it's far from normal.

plambers May 31st, 2016 05:58 AM

St Cirq, it has to get warmer! we want to use our pool! It will be tough to pack given our 3 destinations.

Whathello May 31st, 2016 06:57 AM

Authorities are closing some part of the roads along the Seine.
http://aujourdhuiparis.fr/vigilance-...erges-a-paris/
Since it will continue to rain, there can be more.
I love to watch the Zouave at Pont de Neuilly when there is a lot of water to check if he gets his feet wet.

Whathello May 31st, 2016 07:01 AM

Some pics of what we could get, unless Kerouac made a better report during the last 'flood' in Paris.

MyriamC May 31st, 2016 08:01 AM

For those who are interested to follow thunder/lightning in real time: http://www.lightningmaps.org/

kerouac May 31st, 2016 08:03 AM

Actually, the Zouave is at the Pont de l'Alma. If it rains so hard that it gets washed down to the Pont de Neuilly, half of Paris will have been washed away with it.

Kathie May 31st, 2016 08:49 AM

How can it be raining that much in Paris - I'm not even there!

StCirq May 31st, 2016 09:01 AM

plambers, all I can say is I hope it gets better before you get here. It's pretty bad now, cold and rainy, but at least I don't need to water my garden!

We want to use our pool, too, but not a chance right now!

Whathello May 31st, 2016 09:06 AM

Ker ;-)

fuzzbucket May 31st, 2016 09:52 AM

There are a couple of large trucks parked in back of the headquarters of the Garde républicaine, not far from Bastille.
They are filled with equipment for the flooding drills that were conducted a couple of months ago. Huge blocks of granite, sandbags, that sort of stuff.

I'm glad I live nearby.

kerouac May 31st, 2016 11:33 AM

Anybody who wants to take a boat trip on the Seine should do it within the next two days because the water level is not far from the limit for navigation.

Considering how much rain has fallen not just in Paris but also upstream, I would suspect that navigation will be suspended for at least two weeks.

Christina May 31st, 2016 12:26 PM

The news about the lightning in Parc Monceau was reported in the US media (I saw it on some TV news show on Saturday night) shortly after it happened, the number reported was 11 being injured (children). The French news media only reported 11 injured also. But many more were injured in Germany due to lightning.

PalenQ May 31st, 2016 12:26 PM

guess those bateaux mouche on the Seine are cancelled cause they can't get under bridges - scratch one must thing off your list if going soon.

and forget the tour of Les Egouts too!

fuzzbucket Jun 1st, 2016 01:07 AM

This morning, the quai-side roads on the Right Bank were closed to traffic because they are inundated.
The water reaches half-way up the ramps leading to where traffic normally whizzes down to the river level - but today there were only ducks swimming around.

On the Left Bank, I couldn't even see the benches on the quais.

Haven't been over to Les Berges, near the Musee d'Orsay, but I'm sure all that has been closed.

fuzzbucket Jun 1st, 2016 01:35 AM

Just checked the FaceBook pages of all the "bateaux mouches" - none of them are operating until further notice.

kerouac Jun 1st, 2016 02:31 AM

Les Berges are underwater and all of the Bateaux-Mouches at Alma are tied up halfway across the river.

The Zouave only has water up to his ankles so far. The highest I ever saw it was up to his waist in 1982. During the big flood of 1910 the water was up to his shoulders.

kerouac Jun 1st, 2016 04:55 AM

If you want to see the current water level, here are my pictures: http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com...gh-water-paris

bilboburgler Jun 1st, 2016 06:56 AM

Just been looking at the results of the one month of rain in Prague in one day. The resulting bore of water then charged down the Vltara and hit the Elbe, turning north it seems to have hit Dresden and some smaller towns have then been overwhelmed, with 80,000 inhabitants moved out of their houses, the army called in and then 650,000 sand bags flown in from Denmark. Meanwhile the same basin but facing south seems to have put a bore into the Danube which then breached the defences all the way east in Budapest.

The damage to the Czech economy will ensure that they now cannot afford the US second grade jet fighters they wanted so the USA will not grow as fast this year and Putin will feel comfortable being a bit more abnoxious.

The rain falleth on the just and the unjust.

It got wet,

Good news Trump does not believe in climate change.

StCirq Jun 1st, 2016 06:58 AM

Both the Vézère and the Dordogne have overflowed their banks. There are "Inondation" signs everywhere.

PalenQ Jun 1st, 2016 11:07 AM

Hope those piranhas don't get into the swimming pools when the Dordorgne River, said to be infested with them, come inland with the flooding!

kerouac Jun 2nd, 2016 06:23 AM

I have updated my report.

In any case, the RER C closed today, and the trains from Montparnasse to Versailles are cut off as well due to flood problems.

Therefore the only way to get to Versailles now is from Saint Lazare. Lucky that Versailles has 3 stations!

There is a bus service to replace the closed part of the RER C, though.

How about their handful of practicing Christians also praying?

Or are people of faith now building arks?

Friends in Orleans, just south of Paris, say the main street in the town center is now a river with folks on boats going thru:

I hate to be the bringer of bad tidings but the BBC weather forecast is showing rain in Paris on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with high temps leading to the possibility of more thunderstorms. After that warm and sunny.

I hope that they are wrong. [about the rain bit].

FranknSense Jun 3rd, 2016 03:12 PM

While walking through a top secret office building today, I did notice the weather machine was programmed for moderate rain in France. However, I overheard someone say they might crank it up to heavy rain. You all knowz we Americans can influence the weather? Right? I mean we don't control the weather, but we can direct storms using advanced technology. Sometimes just showing UK Facebook pages to the storms is enough to scare them south, other times we use things like HAARP

Rest assured, Americans determine your fate. So please don't make it worse on yourselves, and just agree with our demands whatever they might be

Thanks kerouac, as always your pictures are informative. We missed this by a day.
