Sorry to do this to you but I would rate Paris as a solid 4. Not a Paris fan.

franco Oct 21st, 2007 03:47 PM

Oh, but there are quite a few missing from the list, other than Skopje:
Monaco: Monaco
Andorra: Andorra la Velha
Città del Vaticano: Città del Vaticano
San Marino: San Marino
Liechtenstein: Vaduz
Turkey: Istanbul (if you have Russia, you should have Turkey, too - both countries are partly in Asia, partly in Europe)
Maybe I'll add my votes tomorrow...

Well the only ones I've been to are:

London-10
Paris-10
Stockholm-10
Copenhagen-10
Rome-8

I didn't fall in love with Rome, as I posted elsewhere, but who could not be amazed at what you see there. The mix of modern with ancient is just incredible.

Franco, I know it's just a slip of the thumb, but shouldn't that say:

Monaco: Monte Carlo

;)

tomassocroccante Oct 21st, 2007 10:14 PM

The city I'm in generally feels like THE place to be to me.

As for capital cities, I give Paris, Rome, Vienna and Amsterdam all 10s. Have had repeated great times in each. I also give Washington DC a 10, as far as my experience there. It's a capital city, as their slogan says.

twoflower Oct 21st, 2007 10:36 PM

Everywhere's a 10 when I'm there. So I'm going to have to rate them how much I want to revisit them.

England London-10
Scotland Edinburgh-9
Ireland Dublin-9
France Paris-10
Belgium Brussels-5
Netherlands Amsterdam-8
Austria Vienna-6
Switzerland Bern-5
Lichtenstrein Vaduz-4
Greece Athens-7
Turkey Istanbul-10

Mind you, focussing on "country" capitals does do an injustice to various "provincial" or regional capitals many of which may also rate a high score. (Bavaria Munich-10, for example).

Dukey Oct 21st, 2007 11:20 PM

And the corollary question COULD be:

Out of all those capitals and trips, how many times have you posted a trip report?

Any particular reason for giving Edinburgh 0, nytraveler ?

franco Oct 22nd, 2007 03:52 AM

1. Two more capitals missing from the list:
Montenegro: Podgorica (Europe's youngest independent country)
Cyprus: Nikosia (even a member of the European Union, and we didn't notice that it's missing so far!)

2. Hello, Tom! Quotation from Wikipedia: "Monte Carlo is the wealthiest of Monaco's various administrative areas, sometimes erroneously believed to be the country's capital, even though there formally is none." (Monaco is a city-state, and there is only one municipality, the municipality of Monaco; Monte Carlo is just one of its - ten, I believe - quarters.) And the German Wikipedia adds (I translate it): "What can be seen as the center of administration is the quarter Monaco-Ville, where many public authorities, the Prince's Palace, and the cathedral are to be found." A little less precise but clearer somehow the Italian Wikipedia: "Monte Carlo is often being called the capital of the Principality of Monaco, but the official capital is Monaco (nowadays Monaco-Ville)."

3. My list:
United Kingdom London-2
Ireland Dublin-?
France Paris-9

Well of course list are silly, but anyone who gives London 5 must be answered. Bear in mind it is 30 years since I went to Athens, and almost 10 since I went to Paris, Rome or Prague. Been to some interesting non-European places since. And one that may or not be European depending on your point of view, and that I just love, is Istanbul.

The other interesting thing is that the list concentrates on capital cities. Has the OP every ventured out of the capital cities on all these journeys?

United Kingdom London-8
France Paris-8
Denmark Copenhagen-6
Finland Helsinki-6
Italy Rome-9
Spain Madrid-7

Estonia Tallinn-7

Istanbul - 10

flanneruk Oct 22nd, 2007 04:23 AM

Surely, though, these numbers are meaningless without an explanation.

The three I'd give a zero to on the basis of one very short visit each, for example:

Skopje: Couldn't find the youth hostel, had to sleep in a ditch (of which, a year or two after the earthquake, there were loads) and the dogs came for me

Sofia: Couldn't get off the train to buy anything to eat because I only had a transit visa, said the soldier sticking the AK47 in my tummy

Vaduz: It was raining and there was nothing worth getting out of the car for so we couldn't be arsed stopping
