Prune People
 

My Mother had several prune people that she used to put out at Christmas. Unfortunatly, the dog got into them at destroyed everything. Does anyone know of a website that these can be found for purchase? I would love to surprise her this christmas.

rhy, I did not know the existence of Prune People until I saw the Rick Steves' Christmas in Europe last weekend and they showed a display of them.

Prune people are found at the Nuremberg Christmas market. However, I don't know if you can buy them online. Beware - I brought some home one year, but when I pulled them out of my suitcase the weevils had crawled out of the prunes and creeped me out.

Weevils? I'm glad it wasn't some worse "pest" that destroys crops, etc.

My Mom had hers for at least 15 years before the dog tried to eat them (luckily no bugs). The dog didn't actually eat them, but chewed them up beyond recognition.

My mom used to make applehead dolls - same principle I suppose. She carved the head out of apples, and then dehydrated them in the oven to preserve them. They eventually 'aged' and got darker as the years wore on.

Rhy, maybe senna leaves would be better for your dog, not prunes?

I thought you meant the "professional sunbathers" who spend every moment of daylight of their holiday basking on the beach. I've seen a few prune people on the beaches in Greece ;)

I figured people would get a kick out of the name, but they are real, and I guess only sold at Christmas markets in Germany. by the way, my Moms next door neighbor could be considered one of the human Prune People; she was always sunbathing and is now guite wrinkled (like a prune)

acc. to the answers some people maybe think, that you are holding them on.
But prune people really exist and can be found at almost every Xmas market in Bavaria and around and also in the Czech Republic.
In Bavarian dialect they have the almost unspeakable name Zwetschgenmanderl. Look at this in the net.

The "Zwetschgenmanderl" on that site are painted pewter, not made from prunes.

Frankfurt's Christmas market is also known for Quetschenmännchen. Though they're usually much smalelr than your description, and I don't think their heads are made of walnuts. It's more like a prune figurine with icing.
