Prune People

My Mother had several prune people that she used to put out at Christmas. Unfortunatly, the dog got into them at destroyed everything. Does anyone know of a website that these can be found for purchase? I would love to surprise her this christmas.

would a picture of Mike Wallace do?

DeborahAnn Dec 4th, 2007 07:52 AM

rhy, I did not know the existence of Prune People until I saw the Rick Steves' Christmas in Europe last weekend and they showed a display of them.

Good luck with your search. I hope someone can help you.

Maybe because they were featured on the tv program you can do a search on the rick steves website. Deborah

Prune people are found at the Nuremberg Christmas market. However, I don't know if you can buy them online. Beware - I brought some home one year, but when I pulled them out of my suitcase the weevils had crawled out of the prunes and creeped me out.

Dukey Dec 4th, 2007 08:53 AM

Weevils? I'm glad it wasn't some worse "pest" that destroys crops, etc.

My Mom had hers for at least 15 years before the dog tried to eat them (luckily no bugs). The dog didn't actually eat them, but chewed them up beyond recognition.

What's prune people ??? Figurines made of prunes ??

maitaitom Dec 4th, 2007 11:23 AM

Are six enough? 12 too many?

((H))

maitaitom Dec 4th, 2007 11:26 AM

Actually I think the old Fletcher's Castoria ad (dating myelf) was "Is three enough, six too many? Twelve prunes might make for a long day.

((H))

Yes Kenderina - there is a Santa Claus and Prune People (and we're not talking about some Pope):

KIDPROJ MCC: Christmas // Christmas - Germany
Prune people are about ten inches tall. Their arms and legs are made out of prunes. Their bodies are made of dried figs. Their heads are made of walnuts ...

My mom used to make applehead dolls - same principle I suppose. She carved the head out of apples, and then dehydrated them in the oven to preserve them. They eventually 'aged' and got darker as the years wore on.

Rhy, maybe senna leaves would be better for your dog, not prunes?

Maria_H Dec 5th, 2007 01:32 AM

I thought you meant the "professional sunbathers" who spend every moment of daylight of their holiday basking on the beach. I've seen a few prune people on the beaches in Greece ;)

rhy Dec 5th, 2007 03:38 AM

I figured people would get a kick out of the name, but they are real, and I guess only sold at Christmas markets in Germany. by the way, my Moms next door neighbor could be considered one of the human Prune People; she was always sunbathing and is now guite wrinkled (like a prune)

artstuff Dec 5th, 2007 03:52 AM

Prune People - Are they the family of Prune Face, from Dick Tracy?

wolfmisc Dec 5th, 2007 07:14 AM

Hi rhy,
acc. to the answers some people maybe think, that you are holding them on.
But prune people really exist and can be found at almost every Xmas market in Bavaria and around and also in the Czech Republic.
In Bavarian dialect they have the almost unspeakable name Zwetschgenmanderl. Look at this in the net.
www.almosteurope.com for instance can supply them.
Merry Christmas and beware of your dog next time.

fnarf999 Dec 5th, 2007 07:27 AM

The "Zwetschgenmanderl" on that site are painted pewter, not made from prunes.

W9London Dec 5th, 2007 07:47 AM

Frankfurt's Christmas market is also known for Quetschenmännchen. Though they're usually much smalelr than your description, and I don't think their heads are made of walnuts. It's more like a prune figurine with icing.

You have a very wise dog...

Will the California Raisins do?

FainaAgain Dec 5th, 2007 10:08 AM

With asparagus legs and garlic eyes? :))

copain1 Dec 5th, 2007 11:16 AM

You could get some Ann Coulter action figures and put them in the oven at 400 for an hour. That might fit the bill.

rhy Dec 6th, 2007 04:41 AM

Well, I did find one on ebay and got it for $10. Not sure if it is the same, but for the price, I thought I'd try.

W9London Dec 12th, 2007 11:07 AM

Correction to my previous post. I was just in Frankfurt and Quetschenmännchen DOES fit OP's description.

hester Dec 12th, 2007 05:29 PM

I saw a very old and I mean old topless lady on the beach in Barcelona. I think she would fit the bill.

Here's a video on how the Nürnberg Zwetschgenmännle are made: http://www.nordbayern.de/artikel.asp...43&kat=264
Click on the picture to start the video.
The little text that's in it is in German but doesn't say much, except that it's all hand made, so no need to worry about the language. The thing is rather self explanatory.
