Provence decision time: Uzes or St Remy de Provence?
 

ALL suggestions/feedback welcome.

One week rental, June 2011. Unfortunately, have time for a full week at only one (but might spend a few days at Provence b and b elsewhere).

Want to take day trips/country drives, as well as a couple days locally "chez nous." The Uzes place is right in town, the St Remy place a few minutes' walk to town. Gotta be close for that morning walk for cafe creme and pain aux raisins (-:

Tough Choice.

If this is your first trip to Provence, you probably would prefer the St Remy location. If this is your third (or more) trip, Uzes might be better.

I would rate both towns as about equal - giving Uzes the edge because it is less touristy - but many prefer the touristy stuff in St Remy.

St Remy is more centrally located, but if you plan to return to Provence in the future, Uzes would be a good choice for this trip.

We've spent 18 weeks vacationing in Provence - and we would return to Uzes, but probably not St Remy (we've spent 2 weeks in both locations).

Yes, this IS a hard choice. Am traveling with daughter, age 23, who loves to shop and cook. I recall your wife loved the shopping in Uzes?ANd of course, there are t hose marvelous markets (in both places) for cooking ingredients.

The reason i hesitated about Uzes is it seemd 1.5 to 2 hours drive from some of the desired day trip places such as Aix en Provence . I think there is about a one hour drive time beween Uzes and St Remy?

If in Uzes, we'll just have to get up earlier in the morning for day trips. But...nous sommes en vacances--getting up early with espresso is not a problem!

She likes the shopping in St Remy also.

Uh-oh. This is making it more difficult!! But i am so very lucky to be able to go and be put in the position to make this decision!!

We've stayed twice in St Remy, 7 days each time. It's charming town with good restaurants, some wonderful shops & galleries as well as a fun market day! St Remy is well situated and it is an easy town to leave & return to after a day of touring!

As Stu stated, a first time visitor is likely to find St. Remy the most convenient. Its about transit times and the roads and highways. I like Uzes but would still recommend St Remy for your first visit. Good luck. Paul

SutD, 2010, and Macanimals, thank you for all the insights of basing in Uzes vs St Remy.
One advantage of Uzes (for us) is it's closer to Montpelier (for a day trip) which appeals to daughter as it's a "young" town with a large percentage of university students.

Mac, is there any special place you've stayed at and enjoyed in St Remy? I checked Provence Paradise, and William has been great at responding,but it's beyond our budget.

Oh dear, I meant StuD!! BTW, Stu's rec of Monpelier is one of the reasons we want to visit, time permitting

For First time to Provence, ST REMY!
Uzes is not in Provence but in the Languedoc.

I prefer Uzes myself, I don't like St Remy much. I don't think it's charming at all, expensive, full of ten million tourists and cars circling around, etc.

CIgalechanta, do you mean you would not recommend Uzes because it is not actually in Provence...or because St Remy is more interesting than Uzes for a first-time visitor to the area? Thank you for clarifying its official geographical region.
I made a few brief stops in Provence, on the route to the Cote d'Azur, many decades ago, and feel like a complete "newbie" to the area now.

On our first (and only, so far) trip to Provence about 2 years ago, I also thought about staying in Uzes, partially because of a fabulous-sounding B&B. In the end we spent 3 nights in St. Remy, at a much less exciting place but in retrospect it was the correct thing to do, as others above have also said. It was much more central to all the places we wanted to visit and I would also recommend it. That said, I LOVED Uzes as a town and if I return someday, might use it as a base for a couple of days.

Thanks, all, I found an affordable (for me) place IN St Remy de Provence that looks lovely and is affordable (for me, anyway).

Once I decide, I'll post here to let now and future people know which ones I considered. Perhaps that will help someone else.

There is one in Uzes town that looks soooo gorgeous, but was a bit of a stretch $$ wise. Still, I'd have done it, but then the unexpected 150 euro additional cleaning fee and 500 euro deposit that would not be returned for up to a month after departure ,were straws that broke my wallet's back!

OK, St Remy it defintely is...but we will do a day trip to Uzes, to enjoy..and for future trip, if we are fortunate enough to be able to return.

I found a lovely place right IN St Remy de Provence town (preferred a place from whichwe can easily walk into town) this is the likely one:

That place does look great. I was in St Remy last May with my mother and sister and we really liked St Remy as a base, and for itself. We had some very nice dinners, enjoyed the Wednesday market, and found it a good jumping-off point for the day trips we wanted to take.
