Provencal markets....when open?
Are they open year round does anyone know. We're going in November and look forward to going to some, but wondered if they are open?
Thanks in advance. |
Most markets operate all year 'round, although of course produce sellers will have less to offer during the winter months. But by late November the holiday merchandise will be out, especially at the santon fairs.

The markets will be smaller, but they are open year round. Arles will still have a really big market every Saturday. I wouldn't say that the produce sellers have less to sell... just different things to sell. Our 'winter' vegetables are just as pretty to look at as the summer ones... big orange and yellow squashes, punpkins, deep purple eggplants, huge white cauliflowers, potatoes of various hues and every kind of apple and pear under the sun, along with grapefruits and avocados from Israel and Spain.
There will still be stalls selling fabrics and tablecloths as well. Patricia |
I'll never forget the dear little piglet who was shivering in his cage at the Arles market when I was there one cold Dec. I don't like to think about where he was going to end up by the end of day.
No, I'm not a vegetarian! |
Glad to hear they're open year round. It's probably lovelier in the warmer months with all the fresh produce and flowers, but at least we can have the experience.
Thanks everyone. |
One large market that I hadn't heard much about was at Cannes--a vast indoor assemblage of fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, chicken, cheeses, flowers and plants...you name it, they had it. Parking is available in a nearby underground lot. The market seems to be very much for the locals, not the tourist trade. We went with a French friend and found it all fascinating--and the melons we bought were wonderful.
