Congratulations! My choice would be Giardino delle Rose in Florence. Heaven on Earth — picturesque even in December — just like the rest of Tuscany. It is spacious so it would not be a problem for you to find a discreet place. In the same time you'll find there such a stunning view of the city...

This is where I would do it: the top of the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore on the Giudecca. It is lovely to see all of Venice spread out in front of you. People often do the tower in San Marco, but lines are terribly long and it is always so crowded. Views from San Giorgio are fabulous. The whole little trip over there by vaporetto and walking to the church is beautiful. Look at a map of Venice and pictures of the church. Giudecca is one of the main islands you see, most of it facing Dorsoduro, but the tip with the church can be seen from San Marco. Nothing wrong with proposing on a gondola ride or in Paris, or on a carriage ride in Vienna, etc., but San Giorgio gives you everything you asked for: beautiful views of a most glorious city, slightly off the beaten path, cool to look at, away from crowds and historical, plus it is romantic and less typical than other places. I think as long as you're sure she'll say yes, you can propose at the beginning of the trip. However, if you have any doubts, I would wait until the end.

I can recommend places in Barcelona. Within Barcelona city, if you like places with views, there are these (I had prepared the post with photos but the system does not allow it :( ): - Tibidabo: is a historic amusement park in Barcelona located next to a large church. You can get there by car, bus or funicular. The views from the terrace of the park are exceptional. - Turó de la Bateria: among the remains of an anti-aircraft battery from the Spanish Civil War you will find the best-placed viewpoint in Barcelona. The anti-aircraft bunkers, which were built in May 1937 to defend the city, have become one of the places from which to enjoy a privileged view of Barcelona. It is a place with a somewhat thug spirit. There are graffiti and people usually sit down to drink beer while having the city at their feet. The only problem is that it has become popular in recent years and there are usually many people. - Carretera de les aigües: it's a road without cars where the people of the city go to play sports or walk the dog. You have to get there on foot or by bike. There are several areas with very nice and quiet benches. - MNAC: it's the national art museum of barcelona. From this point you can see the city with its back to the sea. There are stairs where people sit to listen to live music. Outside the city but within Catalonia there are several amazing towns as well. I'm just giving two examples. - Besalú: you can get there by bus from the center of Barcelona in an hour and a half. It is a town with a marked medieval character. - Siurana: it's a very small town near a vineyard area. It's located on top of a cliff and the tranquility is absolute. I recommend it especially at sunset because of the type of light. |
