Please Help Me Fax France

I'm trying to make reservations to La Chaumiere in Nice and I really can't call right now (at the office). Plus this is frustrating me so much that I feel I just *have* to figure it out or I'll go crazy. It's a matter of pride at this point.

OK, their fax# is (right from their website):
04.93.76.93.88

I know to leave the 0 off at the front, but I also have to dial 011 and then 33 right? And from my office, we have to dial 9 to get an outside line, then 1 + area code.

So I've tried so far -
9 + 1 + 011 + 33 + 4.93.76.93.88
9 + 011 + 33 + 4.93.76.93.88

Neither has worked.

What am I doing wrong?

you aren't actually using the . between the pairs of digits are you?

my office uses 9 for local outgoing and 8 for long-distance; not the same at your office?

if all else fails, go by Kinko's and fax it...probably costs about $4

aussieparker May 10th, 2007 11:36 AM

If you have to deal 9 for outside you don't have to do it for the the fax line
dial 011plus country code and then number, plus do it slowly, for overseas it has to be slow.

jenblase May 10th, 2007 11:37 AM

No I'm not actually using the . between numbers. :)

We just dial a 9 to get an outside line.... I never thought to try 8 before... maybe I'll try that.

nokomis May 10th, 2007 11:37 AM

You may have to keep the 0 instead of dropping it. Do you have international long distance on your phone? Good luck, we have had no problems faxing.

jenblase May 10th, 2007 11:37 AM

Didn't see aussieparker's message before I posted... I'll try it that way too.

At a guess the problem is that your office for some strange reason doesn't allow international calls

Anyhow to quote

<<< To call France from North America, dial 011, then 33 (the country code for France), the area code, and the eight-digit number. Although French area codes are two digits (the first digit is always a 0), you do not dial the zero when calling from abroad. >>>

So it should be 9 011 33 4.93.76.93.88

kerouac May 10th, 2007 11:39 AM

Okay, I went to a website, and the fax number is indeed listed as:
04.93.76.93.88

So 9-011-33-493769388 should work. If not, the fax is out of order.

Hi, jenblase,

you might want to check their fax no again - I just googled and got the following:

+33 (0) 493 79 70 69

no direct web-site- just mentions on others. [if there is a web-site, why not e-mail?]

regards, ann

Jen - the second one should work. Did you try dialing it on a phone to be sure you are getting the fax machine? I dialed 9 011 33 4 93 76 93 88 and it rang twice. I hung up because I didn't want to pay for the call!

jenblase May 10th, 2007 11:41 AM

YES!! aussieparker's method worked. I guess I didn't need to dial 9 on the fax. so just 011-33- and then the rest.

Now let's see if they respond. :)

wombat7 May 10th, 2007 11:43 AM

Try ann's suggestion
9 011 33 493 79 70 69

Your experience sounds just like what happened to me last year. I finally decided to stay up late and call when the rates are cheaper. Saved a ton of frustration, I tried every combination and the FAX would not go through. I found out when I called that they had the machine off. Sometimes, even the right way is wrong. Just start your call right with a "Bon Jour, parlez vous anglais? Use as much French as you can, and the conversation will rapidly turn to English.

Wait a minute -- there are so many places called "La Chaumière" -- I almost got tricked into some different numbers. What is the exact address of the place you want to go?

"La Chaumière" merely means "the thatched cottage" hence the numerous duplications of the name....

Christina May 10th, 2007 12:17 PM

Glad it worked for you, but that isn't always true. You need to dial 9 to get an outside line on my office FAX, also, and I still need to dial 9 when sending an international FAX, because I've done it several times. YOu always have to dial 9 on my office phones or FAX to get anywhere outside the building.

jenblase May 10th, 2007 12:20 PM

There is more than one La Chaumiere in Nice? I thought I specified it was that one. I did find another one in Paris, one in Lyons, CO, and one in Wash DC. :)

Anyway here is the website - I want to go based on recommendations from Weadles amongst others - it sounds fabulous.
www.chaumiere.net

As you can see their website is woefully lacking in info!!

smueller May 10th, 2007 02:06 PM

Your second attempt (9 + 011 + 33 + ...) should have worked. Something is wrong with your phone system or it is not setup for international calls.

I thought Chaumiere meant "chimney."

kerouac May 10th, 2007 09:00 PM

chimney = cheminée

Sarvowinner May 10th, 2007 10:13 PM

It depends on whether your fax line is an external line or your company has it set up to go through your switch/internal system. If it is external, you won't have to dial 9.
