We rented an apartment in Rome this past October through VRBO for the first time ever. The owner wanted a small deposit (100E) and the remaining balance upon arrival, after viewing property. We wired the deposit to the account to reserve the apartment and we paid the balance upon arrival. I would not hesitate to rent from this owner again or through VRBO for that matter. Unless it is a scam, one bad review does so much damage that I don't think owners are willing to take that chance. This was our experience and thank god it was a good one.

I don't race the mini Cooper (it is just my road car).. But I have raced sports cars over the years from Formula Fords to Porsches to a Caterham7 to a little Spitfire . . . (and had a Morgan I <i>didn't</i> race)

@ dulci, your method may work for you....

but we are a family of 5 people - and have very specific location requirements. I want to be central Paris, near the metro... or central London... or whatever. Being a family of 5 complicates things and automatically massively reduces the amount of apartments.

We are typically on a limited vacation - anywhere from 10 days to 2 weeks (if lucky). I don't have a day to spend viewing properties. And I'm certainly not dragging kids and luggage around with me! We have places to go, people to see, and ice cream to eat!

Off-season in New Mexico (or was it Arizona?) with a car is a totally different story.

Now.. having said that... I am no fan of vrbo for many of the reasons above. I view airbnb as a clearinghouse like vrbo. I typically rent from an agency. I also prefer the protection of paying with a credit card. Do we pay more for those conveniences? Absolutely. Totally worth my time and peace of mind. I've been extremely happy with most apartments - but I do a ton of research in advance.

glad your system works for you - but it isn't for everyone.
