Suppose:

Every time you want to drive somewhere, a team of guys with clipboards go over every working part of the car.

You and your backup co-driver both have had years of driving school and road experience.

When you back out of the driveway, a guy in a tower is looking down, monitoring other traffic, and telling you when you can go.

There is a law that nobody can drive within a mile of you.

Every time a car part fails, anywhere, a team of analysts figure out what happened, and that type of failure is immediately made illegal.

The car is tested in traffic and weather conditions (wind) that are several times fiercer than ever occurs in nature.

Think how safe car travel would be!

For years I had trouble getting on a plane, but I told myself: today the weather is fine and the airport is running smoothly; someday when the weather is bad you will not have to get on the plane. Then came that bad day (O'Hare, de-icing 3 times before the flight), and I stayed on the plane anyway. Nothing bad happened, and I've felt better ever since.
