We stayed at the Europa Hotel in the campo SS Fillippo e Giacomo. Castello 4359, Venice (less than 2 city blocks to St. Marks) Tel 041-523-4810.

The hotel charged us around $100 Euro a night in 2003 (no small feat to find a decent place in Venice at that price) and the place was lovely. You can choose a room with or without a private bathroom in it. The rooms were spacious, with tall ceilings, a wonderful view of the square below, and the hotel offered discounts at the restaurants nearby.

Happy travels,

Jules

We just got back from Venice and stayed at a wonderful little hotel called the Hotel Antiche Figure. Check it out on TripAdvisor for excellent reviews. We upgraded to a canal-front room and it was quiet, very large, had a beautiful bathroom and a little balcony overlooking the canal. I believe it was room 201. I think if you check out either the hotel's or expedia's site, there are lots of pictures. Our room was the white and blue one with the little round table in front of the window and the bathroom was the one with the Murano-glass sconces on the mirror. The common rooms are charming. The hotel is right across from the train station which was perfect for us since we were arriving by train. It's true that it does mean another couple of vaporetto stops to St. Marks but that's not exactly a hardship. It's a 3-star hotel but acts like a 4-star.

We just returned from Venice ( family of 4). We stayed in the Accademia area at Hotel Galleria which was ideal. It is away from Rialto and San Marco which are very busy areas. The Accademia and Peggy Guggenheim are right next door, great restaurants ( eg Agli Arboretti) and the bridge which connects to San Marco all right there. Our canal front/view quad room with bathroom was comfortable, spacious and cost about 220 Euro. We recommend staying in that area and felt the Hotel Galleria was a good value. I believe others nearby such as the Pension Accadamie costs much more.

Pensione Accademia in the dorsoduro area is a great B&B. Has lots of repeat customers so it's not always easy to get a reservation. We loved our room with a garden view.

It's on a smaller canal just off the grand canal. Easy to get to San Marco area on the vaporetto. Or you can walk if you want to. Dorsoduro area is quieter than san marco and less crowded, a nice location for a B&B.
Price is good, we paid 233 euros last summer for a superior double room.

Breakfast was included and it was a nice buffet with good selections.

I would definitely stay there again when I return to Venice. www.pensioneaccademia.it

Here's one more to check out:

Pensione Wildner...near Piazza San Marco on the Riva Degli Schiavoni.
The front rooms have spectacular views. Terrific staff...Elisabetta is marvelous!
