WOW [Places we did not like] I am having a difficult time thinking of any place that fits that discription. This after 27 trips to Europe and France in three weeks for three weeks. And the French are wonderful. I'm sure there were things/places we didn't like, but we don't dwell on that. We try to look for the 'best' of wherever we are. BUT I will say Naples and all the graffiti. More than anywhere else we have been. But we were with friends and loved the food, our hotel and the museums. Our worst time was driving the 'Gorges du Verdon'. With the road very narrow, no barries and five thousand feet below, Dick saw nothing and couldn't wait to get to the end. If we talk flights, there are about 6 of 27 that we didn't enjoy. Flight delays, lost luggage. When we went to Venice for four days, our luggage arrived after three days. But we had a lovely hotel, the Gritti Palace. And we had fun with the concierge who was tracking the luggage. After reading StCirq recent post about their home in France, we are inspired to rent a villa in France and stay in one place for a month. Invite family over as we have done before. Our thoughts for the next two years are complete, with friends and family. So it will have to be in 2011. I know I have strayed from the subject matter, but I did my best to answer. Our glass is always 'half full'. ENJOY Iris

Herself and I must be lacking in discrimination: we have never disliked any place we visited.
Yes, we have liked some places more than others, and there are places that we might count as "done" in the sense that we are not aware of any strong incentive to pay another visit. But we have enjoyed all our trips. Do we need help? |
Padraig:
I just as easily could have written your post...our thoughts, precisely. Heading back to Russia for the third time (first since USSR days), and this time adding "fourth world" Belarus, and also Kiev in The Ukraine. There are those who would surely ask "Why"??...and I'd say..."Why not"? The sheer love of travel covers a broad canvas of likes and dislikes. It's all in the research...and what better place than on these pages. Of course, there are several places to which we don't plan to return. But while there we did enjoy some of their more redeeming sights. I truly can't recall a "bad trip" to anywhere. To be able to travel far and wide..how fortunate us Fodor folks are! Keep on truckin', ...and travel til you unravel! stu t. |
Interesting reading.
I note that many of the places disliked were due to hot, sticky weather and crowds, so perhaps it's more to do with the time of year everyone is travelling. We try and get to Europe (long way from Oz!) in either May, or Sept/October, when the weather is not so intense and crowds the same. This year we are going on a Med cruise which starts at the end of October - I'm really looking forward to sightseeing in cooler weather - the heat is just too oppressive. Also, I suppose it doesn't matter to us that it will be too cold to swim, coming from the land of wonderful beaches and islands, it's not high on our list of things to do in Europe! |
I traveled to Italy and France with my daughter's class in 2006. We saw an incredible amount of places in an incredibly short period of time, so especially since there were 43 of us, we had some unpleasant experiences. Like getting pick pocketed in Paris, a bug crawling out of one of the girls' pasta(of course after i'd eaten mine), having the worst food served in all of Europe, and a tour bus driver who threw us off the bus in the middle of a thunderstorm in Rome because the other tour guide called him stupid, and no washcloths, and broken showers, and yes there were a couple of rude people in France, but there were also 10 friendly people for every rude one. And I've seen people here in the US just as, if not more rude to me as a tourist in US cities. But would i not go back because of this? no. I went to see the fountains in Rome, and the Vatican and Pompeii, and Assisi, and the David, and Versailles, and the Louve. Those things that happened just make good travel stories to tell my friends! Besides, wouldn't life be dull without things like that happening to us?

here's a peculiar twist on the question...and bear with me on it. Mrs. jacknyoc and I love Paris...but I really hate the Blvd. St. Michel between Blvd St. Germain and the Seine River. is that peculiar enough?!?
