I think I'm easy to please in the travel department--usually finding something to like in just about everplace I ago. But I would say Monte Carlo would be my least favorite place I've visited in Europe. It's like Disneyworld with a bit of Vegas and Rodeo Drive thrown in the mix.

StCirq Mar 3rd, 2007 06:48 PM

Monte Carlo - who'd travel that far for a mess of concrete and man-tanned jet setters?

Colmar - spare me the attempt at cute

Lake Garda - I can do theme parks in Ohio for half the effort

Mora, Spain - well, to be fair, we didn't INTEND to spend the night in a brothel...

Madrid - OK, the Prado is awesome. The rest I hope never to lay eyes on again.

Zurich - I'll never be old enough or uptight enough to "get" that place

Carthage - like a trip to the South Bronx, only with annoying one-eyed gimpy "guides" all over you

I usually try a place a couple of times before I decide that I don't like it. Could be just a bad day. Some winners are:
St Moritz - nothing there first time, nothing new second time.
Venice - It reminded me of the aftermath of a tropical storm. People using boats to navigate the streets in brown water.
Taormina when a cruise ship is in port. Any portstop when a cruise ship is in port.

Was turned off by Cannes and the Nice area in general.

As for the Florence/Rome debate, mark me down for loving Florence, being underwhelmed with Rome. I think I had no expectations for Florence. We hadn't even planned to go there but we were talked into it by a fellow traveler. We even ended up staying an exra night. On the other hand, we had rather high expectations for Rome, so perhaps that had something to do with it. Of course there were fabulous parts of Rome, but all in all, preferred Florence.

Andorra!!! Could not stand the place.

I love this post I get more nuggets of info when people talk about why they do not like a local then when they do like it. Keep it up.

Carthage after the invasion of the Romans .They left a terrible mess .

Not many that I actively hated, but plenty I wouldn't rush to visit again - in Europe: Rome, Athens, Playa del Ingles and Torremolinos.

Berlin -- a work in progress...for decades.
Land's End -- what a ripoff.
Athens -- its past is past.
Pisa -- OK, so it leans, so what?
Cannes -- you have to be kidding.
Marbella -- Essen South.
Venice -- I just don't get it.

Paris in late November is not a good idea.
Blue Grotto - we were in and out so fast my eyes hardly got a chance to adjust to the darkness inside. It looked like the color of pool water.
Florence - it doesn't feel like a city where it's pleasant to just walk around, too many vespas etc. I loved Rome though.

this is a fun thread. I have been working all day at planning our trip for June. I had just about decided to return to Rome because DH hasn't seen it but gosh I don't know. You can get more information out of this.....would not return to Venice or Florence but always will return to the Luberon.

I seem to be disappointed in many places until I get the city's "biggies" checked off and can then get out of the tourist area and enjoy the town and the people. I think there is something to the saying "you can't enjoy it until the second trip".

City I could do without - DUBLIN.

I find it brash, expensive and lacking in charm.

I'd say after all that time in Europe and only going to two places you didn't particularly like you had an outstanding experience.

I added to this early on, but since then I can add Galway to my distaste list. Visited in February and was quite unimpressed. The city itself is fine, but its a big mess of traffic and crowds. With all of the partying college students it felt way too much like Panama Beach during spring break.

Nice: I felt like we were in Ft. Lauderdale.

Bratislava: Construction + factory smog + miles of high rise housing blocks

Naples: I'm sure there is a nice city in there somewhere but we only found the garbage and graffiti.

Maui: like New Jersey in Pacifics.

Montreal: utterly forgettable.

Pretty much all of France: rude beyond belief and horribly racist in virtually all corners, but this is people, not the actual beauty of the country, but then again people make up the place, and I certainly would never return there.

Rome- Glad I went but was delighted to leave. Can't really say why, it was interesting and I was so anxious to go to Rome. Loved all the rest of Italy.

Bamburg Germany.
It was just dirty, sorry. We had a little meal of some sort when we first got into the town and I washed my hands. By the time we got back to the car my hands were filthy and I barely touched anything. We didn't stay long because I felt like Pigpen the character in Peanuts.

Two other places that just felt creepy were:
Bad Wimpfen, Germany and Las Rambles in Barcelona. I loved Barcelona and would return in a heartbeat but not to walk Las Rambles.

Favorite cities I've visited so far:
Paris, and Prague (a wonderful surprise).

Least favorite: Athens, followed by Amsterdam.

Totally, utterly, least favorite airport: Frankfurt, Germany. If this is what the rest of Germany is like - no thanks. Full of cigarette smoke, gray and dingy, rude, rude, Lufthansa employees at the airport (stewardesses were super though)

Wow – just wow. Nothing I have experienced there could be farther from this view. Perhaps I am just fortunate by birth not to touch any ingrained ethnic nerves, but as usual, I cannot wait for my next trip back to L’Hexagon.
