Beth, You can't go wrong with Paris! It was my first European destination too. If you have time to get out of the city (although the city will last you a lifetime of exploring) you might consider a few days in the Loire or taking the TGV to Lyon.

I look at a lot of different factors - travel time, budget, language, food and also how strong is your relationship?

Japan for inexperienced travelers could be difficult and expensive. Most European cities - especially Rome or Paris are pretty manageable. I would probably skip Germany as it's not as romantic and I never really enjoyed German food beyond beer and brauts.

I'd say ask yourself what are your limitations and also what do you enjoy doing and see what city fits best.

Pick up a couple guidebooks from the library or bookstore. Buy a few travel magazines. As your love for travel grows (and I'm guessing it may) this kind of reading for pleasure is a great way to plan specific trips but also to encourage day-dreams and get good ideas for future adventures.

I too am trying to figure out where to go with my husband, his first trip to Europe. I've only been to Paris once 10 years ago and only for 3 days so I think I might try it again, I wasn't impressed the first time I went, but I was only 18 (I thought it was dirty, the people were mean, it was expensive) that same trip we did Germany and I LOVED Germany. I'd have to disagree about it being Romantic, all the castles and the scenery. I loved Rothenburg.

This trip I think my Husband and I will do 1 week Paris and 1 week Germany. Though I'm having trouble deciding!

I have travelled in the French countryside but not much in Paris so, for those advocating Paris, I can't comment. However, I think Italy can be a great first trip to Europe. The people are very friendly, they speak a lot of English although you should learn some Italian if you go. The food is wonderful, the wine is wonderful and the scenery is fantastic.

Rent a car, bop around the Tuscan countryside, eat fabulous food, see great scenes and you'll be in love with Italy forever!!!
