phone number format for Trenitalia
 

I am trying to buy tickets on trenitalia. FINALLY got it all figured out and have my three segments of the trip picked out. when trying to buy them they give me 9 minutes to pick seats on three legs and get all my info entered. I have done it so much now that I can do it in my sleep! But it keeps kicking out my contact phone number because it is in the WRONG format!!!!!!
I am in the USA so country code is +1
I have tried +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx no won't fit
I have tried +1(xxx)xxx-xxxx fits, but still wrong
Tried +1 xxx-xxx-xxxx no
Does anyone know this for sure? I am tired of guessing based on internet searches.

I just did this with no problem. (Pleasant surprise!) I don't remember exactly but I suspect I entered my phone number with no parentheses and no dashes. And probably no spaces. European phone numbers do not include dashes or parentheses.

If you're IN the USA, you don't use +1. That's for calling TO the USA.

First dial 011, the U.S. exit code.
Then dial 39, the country code for Italy.
Next dial the area code (2–4 digits).
Finally dial the phone number (5–8 digits).

Note also that Italy does not drop the initial 0 in the area code unlike all other European countries.

If i understand this correctly and you are just trying to enter your phone number into an online form (others' comments talk about calling but i think that is not what you meant), then just type in +1 and your ten digit number (including area code) all together, no spaces, brackets nor hyphens: +1xxxxxxxxxx

St. Cirq is under the mistaken impression that you're trying to <b>call </b> Trenitalia. You do need the +1 when entering a US phone number on an Italian form. No parentheses or dashes.

The dropping of the 0 in the city code is true, but irrelevant in your case.

You do have to enter the plus one because the whole point is if Trenitalia wanted to call you.

Try 001xxxxxxxxxx without the dashes

I have run into this before with on line purchases in other EU countries. Sometimes, when asked for a contact phone number the software is written to accept only the standard local format. This would probably be a 10 digit number starting with ¨0¨. It is possible that no other format will be accepted. Very often error messages are poorly written and almost impossible to understand.

If you continue to encounter problems, use your hotel phone number without the ¨+¨ and without the country code.

I finally got it with the 001 with my 10-digit number. Thanks for the help from everyone!
