I've met a number of Mac users who think like that, but transferring files has nothing to do with what OS the machines are running. What other features are you looking for?

I want to have address book, calendar, reminders, appointment, calculator, etc. and also wireless connection, MP3 player, web browser, easy rechargeable battery,I am not sure what else is standard. I've never used one, but thought that it would be helpful to have one when I travel.

Also the ability to download and store maps, transportation schedules & route, maybe different languages translator,

Anything new on this front ?

If you have a Mac, you cannot back up a Pocket PC to it, since there is no desktop software for a Mac. As far as I know, the Palm is the only PDA with Mac desktop software. For all the things nancy161 mentioned above, a Palm Treo would work, although not all Treos will work in Europe for phone / web connections. Our Treo is no good for phone or Internet in Europe, but we could use it with the TomTom GPS software as a navigator, as well as all the regular PDA applications.

I have heard rumors that Apple is working on an iPod cell phone, but who knows whether that's true, and even if so, what features it will have.

Treo doesn't have WiFi internet? That sounds like a GOOD reason to get something else.

I have a Palm TX. I downloaded Mappy maps for the the apartments & other key addresses in Rome, London & Paris. However they are not satisfactory. They are of a different resolution and the pin pointer seems to have shifted from the website version. Does any one know of a free & better source for palm?

Also a cheap way of converting it to GPS?

Responding rather late to Robespierre, re the Treo: Our Treo was purchased through Sprint and it is not GSM, so it won't work in Europe. Presumably if you had a Treo that was GSM, you could connect to the Internet in Europe. The GPS software on the Treo worked very well.

You can try if for free for two weeks.

This program downloads any sort of document or web page beautifully and has all sorts of nifty features (highlight, search) and your documents can be organized...

It does a perfect job with pdf documents (far better than the free Adobe Acrobat Palm program, which often fails).

For Paris, the best map resource is www.pagesjaunes.fr - and RepliGo is fabulous for those.

With a PDA that's has a data phone, Google Mobile Maps allows you to plan routes, as well as locate sights and nearby establishments. If your PDA also has GPS, it will map your location as you move around. I'm using an iPAQ 6510 on T-MobileWeb ($5.99/mo), and it works perfectly.

Maps are downloaded dynamically through your data phone from the Google server whenever you (or the GPS) enter a location, so there's never any need to buy or install them.
