Paris Packing--Why do women have to do it
 

I'm a guy! Why do women (spouses-female partners) always do the packing?? Men have good intentions but !!!!!!!!!!

Because women (some, not me!) allow themselves to be used as a maid service..... or we are better at it..... or everyone likes to pretend that it is the wives who always have to drag half their wardrobes with on a trip, but if truth be told, it is the man who feels he needs to take so much, so poor wife has to do packing to stop this bad habit.... or women are more organised.... or.... or .... or....
I wouldn't dream of deciding what my husband should take on a trip and then pack it for him too, and he wouldn't dream of expecting me to.

I don't do my husband's packing, but I do make suggestions and recommendations. And, I always ask whether he feels like dressing up for dinner on occasion or not before making reservations, as I think it's a bit silly to dine in a fancy place in your casual duds.

I looked this up at the web site of the United Nations International Committee on the Status and Roles of Men and Women.

Apparently, there is an international treaty, signed by all member nations of the UN, that requires it.

ira, to clarify, I think that is Section IV, article 7. It is right after Section IV, article 6 that forbids men to ask directions when lost, and right before Section IV, article 8 which is the one that requires women to remember their make-up, hair, or forgotten sweater as you are about to depart.

Thank goodness you are here to keep us right. When you were in there did you see any reference to washing windows as this has been a matter of some debate in our household? As I have told my wife, I'm more than happy to do it but I am not prepared to go against internationally agreed protocols - who knows what the repercussions might be?

We each do our own packing. That way, no blame for forgetting something. I tend to pack lighter than my sweetie does. I just make suggestions (jacket for fancier restaurants) on what to bring.

Obviously, because it needs to be done correctly. :->

Forty+ years ago we took a little trip to Mexico. As a new wife, I packed for both. We left in our "flip-flops" and arrived with no shoes because they were back on the kitchen(?) table. It was all very peculiar, but I never packed for him again. He always packs too much these days. Half of it comes home unworn & is hung in the laundry room for pressing before it goes back into the closet. Most of that I just shake & give to him with a smile & an "all done."

I do most of the packing (wardrobe planning), but hubby assembles his bag himself. However, I 'augment' his choices b/c he takes too little, since I can 'always do a little laundry' along the way. (!) Also, perhaps I have a little of the 'control issue' going on :)

Last trip to the Caribbean, he forgot his jammies (boxers). I bought him some in Antigua. Alas, they were Dockers, not something Antigua-cool.

Geez louise, and I thought I was a control freak!! I do the planning. I think that's enough. I was so excited when our son turned 10 and could do his own packing himself. Of course, due to a little problem with the forgotten underwear, I do ask each of them to check to make sure the undies are packed. I do still make my son write a list of what he needs to pack and check it off as he's putting the items in, because sometimes you can't see the clothes for the toys.

Never would occur to me to presume to do anyone else's packing - boyfriend or otherwise.

On the flip side of your question, why would you allow a woman to do your packing, N2it? ;-)

Do all of you who each do their own packing take all their own stuff separately in their own bags?

We stopped doing that after "my" bag failed to arrive at our destination and I had to spend 2 weeks in a fairly remote Greek village with only the clothes I had travelled in, plus a couple of cheap and tacky tourist souvenir tee-shirts and a bikini that had the unfortunate habit of becoming transparent when wet.

Nowadays we divide half our stuff equally between 2 bags and I end up packing it so that I know I've got enough clothes in both bags to manage on just in case :-)

This is the way it works in our house. When my husband flies off on a business trip, he does his own packing. He knows what is suitable and appropriate.

When we go on vacation together, I do the packing. Why? Because I have to look at him 24/7 and I want the view to be good. I pack only the clothing I like seeing him in, because there's no chance of saying "Darling, why don't you run upstairs and change that shirt..."

We each pack our own. Even our kids pack their own. And I haven't ironed in 20 years.

We each pack our own and it involves very little discussion. We pretty much wear on vacation what we wear at home, depending on the weather.
