Paris outdoor food markets
 

Last night I watched Paula Deen's European Vacation (London and Paris) followed by the barefoot contessa in paris. Both of them went to a great outdoor food market--curiously, they both stopped for chicken at what appeared to be the exact same location. Does anyone know where they were? I'd love to visit on my next trip.

Anyone? I'm interested in this answer also for our trip in 2 weeks. The "chicken man" (as Paula named him)has a lovely handlebar moustache and there is a large rotisserie case on the front of the booth with new potatoes in the bottom.

I have several Barefoot Contessa episodes on DVD in which she does French food. I did not see the man with a mustache but she did show a chicken roaster and said something like "when I come to Blvd. Raspail market". She also picked up bread at Poilane and cheese at la fromagerie 31.

Sorry, didn't see Paula Deen and looking through her episodes I can't figure out which one you saw. On the 11th here in San Jose there was one on Pub Food.

On Foodtv under "specials" you'll see that this one will be reaired next week and once again in August sometime

You know, she also has a cookbook out on French cooking (Barefood Contessa). I checked it out from the library and have seen it at Williams and Sonoma. I didn't notice if she had any info on food markets in Paris but you might try looking there.

Well, I can't see anything that says special. Are you looking at the program guide or the individual show pages? What day, what time, and which cook - Deen or Contessa.

Paula's European Adventure (first trip to London and Paris). It's scheduled to air again 7/16 at 7pm (eastern/pacific).

I'm almost certain that Paula Deen was at the Bastille Market because in the opening shot you can see the Colonne de Juillet (and there are similar photos in a book I have called "Paris in a Basket"). This market is held on Thursdays and Sundays from 7AM - 2:30 PM on Boulevard Richard Lenoir, between rue Amelot and rue Saint-Sabin. The Bastille metro stop is a block south of Amelot/Richard Lenoir, and the Breguet/Sabin metro stop is at Richard Lenoir/Saint-Sabin.

Ina Garten did mention that Raspail is her favorite market. This one is held on boulevard Raspail between rue de Rennes and rue de Cherche-Midi on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7am - 2:30 PM. Rennes metro stop is at Raspail/Rennes.

There is a "chicken man" on rue Cler with a large rotisserie with the potatoes in the bottom. The rue Cler market is open every day (but I'm not sure if the "chicken man" is there on Sundays).

There are lists all over the web of the traveling/open air markets in Paris. And, "Paris in a Basket" is a wonderful book. You can find this for as low as $8.98 (new, but click on "used and new" at Amazon.com

That particular market is really not the be all and end all just because Paula was thre. I love the pl. Monge market on Sundays--and the chicken there is exactly as you describe along with paella and choucroute garnie at the same stand. I love the Richard Lenoir that Donna has identified as a possible. It is HUGE--goes for blocks. But there are markets all over Paris each day

I loved Paula's European vacation on Paris & London. Showed so many wonderful sights. I have seen Ina's (Barefoot Contessa) Paris show before and while I loved it, it really didn't show nearly as much of Paris as Paula's did. It was wonderful seeing Paris through Paula's eyes since that was her first trip abroad. I particularly liked it when her sons surprised her. Very heart warming show.

I just watched back the tape from Sunday's show and it was the Bastille Market. Sign in front of the shop was (probably) generic - Poulet Rotis. We shall see - leaving this coming weekend!

Thanks so much for getting this. I'll head to the Bastille Market on Sunday morning! Can't wait.

We just got back from Paris and London last week. We made a point to find the kitchen store called E. Dehillerin (had seen it listed in Barefoot Contessa's Paris cookbook). I thought it would be kind of like a Williams Sonoma but it was more of a kitchen supply store. Fabulous! If you like to cook, it's really worth finding. I bought some copper but not the big roasting pans that Paula Deen did!
