And - let's look at this objectively . . .

In case you didn't know -- if you buy a 4-day Paris Museum/Monument Pass and let's say there is a one day strike that closes all the sites. . . . One does not get a day added to the Pass validity. You just lose out 25% of the value w/ no refunds - no exceptions. Or, if 3 hours after you buy the Pass - a general strike is called and you can't go to ANY sites for your full time in Paris - will you get a refund?? Nope . . .

Soooooo - I hardly see a huge moral issue here. One buys 4 days of validity, does it REALLY matter if two different people use different days? They can't use it at the same time so the organizations are not losing any money.

PQ -- you are just being silly now. A rant about miscreants and illegality. Fer cryin' out loud!

If there is an ugly American on this thread it surely ain't the OP. Just saying . . .

PalenQ Mar 12th, 2011 07:22 PM

janis I do NOT consider you an ugly American! Just to clear that up from your last post.

BTW your example of strikes is completely extraneous to the issue and indeed a canard. and to use it to justify wrongdoing is to me is simply pathetic!

Is this a huge moral crime - no - is it illegal yes. That is my only point and I guess I should not expect folks like you to have the same moral compass as I - but I do and for you to paint me as the miscreant is well... very expected of you.

"<i>janis I do NOT consider you an ugly American! Just to clear that up from your last post.</i>"

Oh for Pete's sake!? Now you don't even remember what you post. No, you didn't call ME and ugly American. But you DID essentially say the OP is.

you posted >><blue>I would hope they do check - and if the sex is different they may and nab miscreants like you that give all American travelers IMO a BAD name!</blue><<

"<i>BTW your example of strikes is completely extraneous to the issue and indeed a canard. and to use it to justify wrongdoing is to me is simply pathetic!</i>"

Not IMO. The Pass doesn't mind keeping your money. And they shouldn't object to you getting full value for it either.

wrongdoing? illegal? hardly

(I don't have a horse in this race - I personally wouldn't share a Pass. But I honestly don't see a problem w/ doing so. Asking a simple question about IF one can share a pass gets poor mkr4440 raked over the coals, called a crook/miscreant/ugly American. One of the silliest things I've ever seen here.)

come on janis dear you do and the horse is moi - you would not have even bothered to react if anyone else had said this and you know it. Stalking again? At least this time you did not accuse me of plagiarism or copying as you usually do.

Orangazations are "losing money" because the pass was designed and is intended for ONE PERSON. That is the condition. Lots of passes are like that because they would lose a lot of money if multiple groups of people shared passes, that is obvious. This is true for museum passes as well as transportation passes. I also don't see the relevance of strikes at all.

People are just cheap, that's all, and don't think there is anything wrong with cheating municipalities even as they are trying to take advantage of the benefits of special passes and cheap transportation. A lot of people don't have a strong moral compass when it comes to cheating organizations or cities, even though museums are generally not wealthy organizations.

too bad I think that folks like janisj condone and enable this and yes I think it is being an ugle American. Sorry but that's my take.

LSky Mar 14th, 2011 09:22 AM

The term "Ugly American" is very offensive. Don't you think that people world wide are capable of engaging in "ugly" behavior?

PalenQ Mar 14th, 2011 11:14 AM

LSky - yes I do - even - meme! the French, for sure. But it seems that Americans stand out so I think folks abroad are judging us harder - but you are indeed right IMO - and perhaps ugly is too strong a word here for a rather minor issue I guess - whether or no Paris museums are denied a few euros - but yes uncouth perhaps tourist who only think of themselves.

janisj - under your first 'strike' theory regarding potential strikes should I with my railpass try to dodge the ticket taker on SNCF trains - not impossible IME - and not use a day on my pass because down the line I could encounter a strike?

would you likewise advise me and others to do this? Or hop the gates of the Metro in Paris if we have a Paris Visite Pass under the theory that the metro could, as has been the case in the past year, be 'en greve' or on strike?
