Paris museum pass - check ID?
When you use the pass, do they check ID? Thanks.
|
Not when I was there last year.
|
I've had several and they never checked me either. Why the Q?
Planning on sharing passes with others? |
My husband and I are purchasing museum passes for our trip. When he leaves for work obligations, my friend is flying out to join me for a few days. Wondering if she could use his pass. KWIM? Thank you!
|
would you also feel that if not caught it is right to shoplift from stores once in Paris or anywhere?
I would hope they do check - and if the sex is different they may and nab miscreants like you that give all American travelers IMO a BAD name! |

why not just buy a 1-day pass with your husband - are there major price breaks for buying longer versions?

1-day passes have not been available for several years. The minimum is 2 days. And the passes do become less expensive as the duration increases.
|
They did not check when I was there in November as you typically just flash it at them on your way in. You do however have to write your name on it so they have every right to ask for ID if they are suspicious. I just read the back of mine and it does say "For personal use only" so you really should be buying one for each person.
That being said I guess the line is a bit blurry as far as both your husband and friend sharing the same pass. On one hand, yes it is a bit immoral to use someone else's pass however there is still only one person using it at a time. It's not like you are trying to sneak 3 people in to the Louvre on 2 passes during the same visit. Since the passes have unlimited use you can go into the museum as many times as you wish during the time the pass is valid. Regardless of who is holding it you still paid the admission fee. I personally would play it safe and just buy shorter length passes for both people. A 2 day pass is only 35 Euros which is like paying regular admission to 2 museums. Trying to save 35 Euros is not going to be worth it if you get arrested. If you are trying to vacation on a budget I would also invest in the "Paris Visite" pass also on the tourism website. It gives you unlimited rides in zones 1-3 on the metro, plus the bus, tram and RER and is only 29.90 Euros for 5 consecutive days. |
It wasn't necessarily a money issue, I think only a 5-10 euro savings. Not a big deal, didn't mean to offend with the question.
|
On Sundays many museums ar half off or greatly discounted - the first Sunday of the month some, including Louvre are free - so do not buy a Museum Pass perhaps to cover Sunday when admissions are often greatly reduced.
|
If it wasn't a money issue, why not just do the right thing to begin with?
|
because we have to buy a 4 day even though my husband can only use 3 (don't sell 3 day). would be nice not to let that 4th day go to waste. sheesh.
|
and I know I should let this go, but PalenQ, is name calling really necessary? It was an innocent question. "miscreants like you that give all American travelers IMO a BAD name", really? It's much more nicer and enjoyable on these boards when people are polite.
|
You are right mku, it's not fun to be made to feel a "miscreant". I didn't mean to sound grumpy, I really just wanted to know.
I was read the riot act once because I mentioned that a clerk at the library let me slide on a fine and I made a donation to the Friends Foundation with the fine money. For shame, for shame. (I gave the FF more than the fine would have been) Enjoy Paris |
weird how probably really nice folks with a great moral compass normally can sanction for themselves simple cheating and think it is the justifiable thing to do. And 'miscreant' is not name calling but is describing excatly what you are doing =
Sorry calling a spade a spade! |
"<i>I know I should let this go, but PalenQ, is name calling really necessary?</i>"
Don't mind PQ -- he can't help himself. |
PalenQ, is name calling really necessary? It was an innocent question. "miscreants like you >
You obviously do not know the meaning of the word 'miscreant' or you would not charge me with name calling - it is not name calling but accurately describing you and your actions - here is how Wiki defines it: mis·cre·ant/ˈmiskrēənt/ Noun: A person who behaves badly or in a way that breaks the law. Adjective: (of a person) Behaving badly or breaking a law. More » Wikipedia - Dictionary.com whilst perhaps in your moral context (but not mine) you are not behaving badly but you are definitely breaking the law, another meaning of miscreant and the one I meant in describing what you wish to do - break the rules as regards Paris Museum Passes - break the law. so please do not accuse me of name calling but calling it as it is. thank you |

And - let's look at this objectively . . .
In case you didn't know -- if you buy a 4-day Paris Museum/Monument Pass and let's say there is a one day strike that closes all the sites. . . . One does not get a day added to the Pass validity. You just lose out 25% of the value w/ no refunds - no exceptions. Or, if 3 hours after you buy the Pass - a general strike is called and you can't go to ANY sites for your full time in Paris - will you get a refund?? Nope . . . Soooooo - I hardly see a huge moral issue here. One buys 4 days of validity, does it REALLY matter if two different people use different days? They can't use it at the same time so the organizations are not losing any money. |
PQ -- you are just being silly now. A rant about miscreants and illegality. Fer cryin' out loud!
If there is an ugly American on this thread it surely ain't the OP. Just saying . . . |
janis I do NOT consider you an ugly American! Just to clear that up from your last post.
BTW your example of strikes is completely extraneous to the issue and indeed a canard. and to use it to justify wrongdoing is to me is simply pathetic! Is this a huge moral crime - no - is it illegal yes. That is my only point and I guess I should not expect folks like you to have the same moral compass as I - but I do and for you to paint me as the miscreant is well... very expected of you. |
"<i>janis I do NOT consider you an ugly American! Just to clear that up from your last post.</i>"
Oh for Pete's sake!? Now you don't even remember what you post. No, you didn't call ME and ugly American. But you DID essentially say the OP is. you posted >><blue>I would hope they do check - and if the sex is different they may and nab miscreants like you that give all American travelers IMO a BAD name!</blue><< "<i>BTW your example of strikes is completely extraneous to the issue and indeed a canard. and to use it to justify wrongdoing is to me is simply pathetic!</i>" Not IMO. The Pass doesn't mind keeping your money. And they shouldn't object to you getting full value for it either. wrongdoing? illegal? hardly (I don't have a horse in this race - I personally wouldn't share a Pass. But I honestly don't see a problem w/ doing so. Asking a simple question about IF one can share a pass gets poor mkr4440 raked over the coals, called a crook/miscreant/ugly American. One of the silliest things I've ever seen here.) |
(I don't have a horse in this race>
come on janis dear you do and the horse is moi - you would not have even bothered to react if anyone else had said this and you know it. Stalking again? At least this time you did not accuse me of plagiarism or copying as you usually do. |
Orangazations are "losing money" because the pass was designed and is intended for ONE PERSON. That is the condition. Lots of passes are like that because they would lose a lot of money if multiple groups of people shared passes, that is obvious. This is true for museum passes as well as transportation passes. I also don't see the relevance of strikes at all.
People are just cheap, that's all, and don't think there is anything wrong with cheating municipalities even as they are trying to take advantage of the benefits of special passes and cheap transportation. A lot of people don't have a strong moral compass when it comes to cheating organizations or cities, even though museums are generally not wealthy organizations. |

too bad I think that folks like janisj condone and enable this and yes I think it is being an ugle American. Sorry but that's my take. |
The term "Ugly American" is very offensive. Don't you think that people world wide are capable of engaging in "ugly" behavior?
|
LSky - yes I do - even - meme! the French, for sure. But it seems that Americans stand out so I think folks abroad are judging us harder - but you are indeed right IMO - and perhaps ugly is too strong a word here for a rather minor issue I guess - whether or no Paris museums are denied a few euros - but yes uncouth perhaps tourist who only think of themselves.
|
janisj - under your first 'strike' theory regarding potential strikes should I with my railpass try to dodge the ticket taker on SNCF trains - not impossible IME - and not use a day on my pass because down the line I could encounter a strike?
would you likewise advise me and others to do this? Or hop the gates of the Metro in Paris if we have a Paris Visite Pass under the theory that the metro could, as has been the case in the past year, be 'en greve' or on strike? |
