I was in Paris last April and am returning the 23rd of this september. I highly reccomend the Hotel Bonaparte for location and price
( around 85E). It is very near the St. Sulpice Metro stop and on one corner of the Jardin du Luxemburg. It serves a continental breakfast and is within walking distance of the Seine and all of the museums and monuments along the Seine. It doesn't have a web site as it is very small yet clean with marble baths and nice people working there. it's address is Hotel Bonaparte, 61 rue Bonaparte, phone 011 43-26-97-37. Chill girl. ANYWHERE you stay in Pris will be great. You'll be in Paris!

Thanks so much to everyone who has given me advice! I will try to chill out! You are all right . . . we will be in Paris, so where we stay should not be stressing me out so much!

I will let you know when we book a place!

I'm happy to read all these good suggestions because I'm also looking for a hotel in Paris in this price range. However I'm still wondering if I'd rather be in St. Germain des Pres or the Latin Quarter. I am a woman in my 50s, traveling to Paris alone for a week. It's important to me to be able to walk back to the hotel in the evening without feeling afraid. I'll be there in early March, so dark will still come early. My sense is that St. Germain des Pres may feel slightly more comfortable to me. Do you agree?

Incidentally, we stayed in the 7th last time and found that Rue Cler was great for breakfast, but closed up tight after dark.

Sorry, I don't recommend Hotel d'Angleterre on rue Jacob. I stayed there and thought it is highly overrated. Rate we paid for 3 last year was 248 euro w/out breakfast. It would have been ok if the room didn't have peeling paint and mold in the bath.

you may want to check the following hotels (both run by the same family) in the rue cler area (7th) :
Hotel Latour-Maubourg (www.latourmaubourg.com)
and
Hotel Valadon (www.hotelvaladon.com)

I had the exact same question about 3 weeks ago when I began my Paris research - you may want to search for it under as my question was Rue Cler or Rue Jacob? Having said that I must tell you that I leave in a week and am saying on St Germaine Blvd. based on fantastic feedback I received. First, I looked at proximity to metros and feel the closer I am the better( I am a block or 2 away). I also considered that since my trip is short( 4 days) and it is my first visit I wanted to experience as much of Paris as I could( the area I am staying in seems more lively than Rue Cler). I am also block or 2 away from Rue Jacob so will plan to walk it several times. Now my dilemma is that I have 2 hotel rooms booked and have to cancel one of them and cant decide which one to stay in!

Natalie - Have you booked a place yet? My husband and I stayed at the College du France last November and loved it! I've been to Paris six times and have stayed in the 1st, 5th and 7th. The 5th is my favorite arrondissement, and the College du France my favorite hotel so far! In fact, it will probably be my reigning favorite as it will be hard to stay elsewhere from now on...

LunaBella, do you know if College du France had triple rooms? Any particular room you would recommend? (e-mail: [email protected]) Thank you so much!

Hi,

Another plug for staying on Ile St Louis.Great neighbourhood, may restaurants, easy walk to major sites. I stayed at Deux-Iles. Lutece would be another good choice.
Nearby, on the left bank are the Le Notre Dame and De Notre Dame hotels which are both very well located, one on the Seine, the other a block from it. In the Marais I've stayed at Bretonnerie and have heard good things about the Caron de Baumarchais. I also stayed at the Timhotel Jardon des Plantes. Not a bad location, one long block from Seine, near university. Abput a 10 minute walk to Notre Dame. Rooms were clean and small.

ilovelabs2003, we stayed at the College du France this May and loved the hotel and location. If you need monument location you are a skip and a jump from the Cluny which is a wonderful museum and within a walk of so many things that make Paris the fantastic city it is. If you could pay a little more our friends stayed on the top floor at the hotel and had a huge room, I think it was number 61 or 62 our room was on the floor below, good but theirs was really good for about 10 euros more!!! Staff there is extremely helpful and I could go on and on about the area. Deborah

Sorry, I am really tired and its Friday, I didn't see the original date, but to one and all, I still love the Hotel du College de France and the location!!! Deborah

If it is not too late, I will throw my hat in the ring. We stayed at the Hotel Derby Eiffel in the 7th. It is only about a block from the metro, 2 blocks from the head of Rue Cler and 3 blocks from two bakeries with stuff to die for. there is also a supermarket one block from the hotel and a laundromat within the first block. Please note that in Paris if you are close to a metro stop you are well located to get anywhere in a short time.

You have already mentioned the Hôtel Residence Monge. I have stayed there two different time and would recommend this hotel to you. It is clean, they were plesant and helpful and it is in a good location with two meto stops within a block of the hotel.

If the price is a concern, you might consider the Hôtel Jean Bart near the Luxembourg gardens. The rooms are about the same size as the Monge, but the decorating is dated and it could use a "face lift". Last year I paid 55 euro for a room and that included breakfast. The metro was not as near as the Monge, but there were two or three bus stops near the hotel that I used frequently. If you are interested, call for a reservation. They only speak French, so be prepared when they answer the phone.

We stayed at the Hotel du Danube on my trip to Paris. This is located on rue Jacob. I found this to be a wonderful part of town to stay. We felt close to everything. Only bad thing to us was having to ride the metro line 4 to get us most places in the city-though it was quite easy to use. We felt more comfortable riding the buses, but didn't do this on our own. We liked the hotel and the staff. We discovered Laduree pastry down the street and took to stopping there for a macaroon.

Natalie,

It sounds like you're a researcher/planner like me! From one Type A to another, here is a website that is sooooo much fun. http://wfd.pagesjaunes.fr/pj.cgi

All you do is type in the name of the hotel and the address and click the button at the bottom of the screen. Look for the link titled "Photo" and up will pop a photo of that building. On the right side of the screen are arrows. Clicking on the arrows will show you the neighboring buildings up and down and across the street.

This way you can research the neighborhood. Be careful, though, this site is very addicting!

Have fun planning and have a wonderful trip.

Someone mentioned Hotel La Motte Picquet.Good location, but far from a good hotel. Lobby looks great and it's clean, but rooms in front are too loud and in back too depressing, small and hot (we were there early June). There are many better hotels close by.
MHO (and my wife's and couple we were with).

francophile03 Oct 28th, 2003 05:34 AM

The pictures on the Motte Picquet website look very nice. It is surprising to read that some rooms are depressing, but I guess this shows that probably the best rooms are pictured.

I was just like you in my hotel search! I just wanted the best trip I could arrange in the neatest neighborhood and area. I finally decided to stay at Deux Continents because it was affordable and in a wonderful area on Rue Jacob. I LOVED it! Check this forum for more info!

hey labs. i just got back from paris and stayed at the excelsior. it is in the latin quarter. it is a very inexpensive hotel with a lift. the rooms are ok. the web site is excelsiorlatin.com. the staff was very helpful the rooms were a bit dated but you are only sleeping there and it was fine for that. the bathrooms were were also ok. i think a double is about 74 euro. dont eat the breakfast at 6 euro. there is a place across st. michael that you can get 2 croissants a juice and coffee for 4.50 euro.
