Paris GTG in late September

O.K., my countdown clock shows that I still have 94 days, 14 hours and 20-something minutes before we leave for Paris, but I can't wait any longer!!

My sister and I will be in the City of Light from Wednesday, September 24th until our departure on Tuesday, September 30th, and I want to start the ball rolling for a Fodors GTG. On my last trip, I had the pleasure of meeting and enjoying drinks and dinner with Tod and ggnga. It was one of the highlights of my trip!

So, who else will be in Paris on these dates and would like to get together? The more, the merrier!

tod Jun 20th, 2008 09:51 PM

Hi Gina!
I hope a lot of good folk here will make a date for a GTG in Paris!
We really enjoyed our evening a month ago now ( boo hoo!) with ggnga & AyQuehago at 'Insulaire.
I am sure G will make it - she has a little surprise for you - from me!

At last my trip report on Paris is finished with photos and I will be making an attempt on our UK part of the holiday, which I know you are anxious to hear about - patience dear friend!

Good luck for the GTG!

travgina Jun 21st, 2008 07:42 AM

Thanks, tod! I'm leaving tomorrow, so won't be checking back in until next weekend, but I hope we get a nice group together too.

By the way, be sure to wish your husband a happy birthday from me on Monday as we both celebrate our day on different continents!

Gina

tod Jun 21st, 2008 08:43 AM

Go safe Gina and a very Happy Birthday to you!!

cparris Jun 21st, 2008 09:56 AM

Oh thats too bad I will be there the week before...from Sept. 15-21.

janyceh Jul 3rd, 2008 03:20 PM

Gina

I am a fairly new poster to Fodor's. Will be in Paris Sept 20-27 and would love a GTG.

Jan

mariebut Jul 3rd, 2008 05:10 PM

I,m another reasonably new poster and we will be in Paris from 25th to 29th Sept so a GTG sounds wonderful.

LowCountryIslander Jul 3rd, 2008 06:42 PM

Oh...Bummer. I will be in Paris from Sept. 19-23. Have a great time! :)

travgina Jul 8th, 2008 02:22 PM

janyceh and mariebut, I've been gone on vacation so haven't checked in here lately, but was delighted to see your posts! We would definitely like to meet up with you both for drinks and/or dinner.

To accommodate all of us, it looks like the evening of the 25th or 26th would work best. What do you think?

Anyone else care to join us?

travgina Jul 8th, 2008 02:28 PM

I posted so quickly that I didn't mention another option: we could also meet for lunch instead of dinner if that would work better for some.

Gina

janyceh Jul 8th, 2008 03:45 PM

Gina

Either the 25th or 26th, lunch or dinner would be fine. Although, since I leave in the AM of the 27th, perhaps if it is the 26th, lunch would be better. But, I will go with the flow.

Woody Jul 8th, 2008 05:01 PM

Gina,

My wife and I will be in Paris for two weeks, and can attend on either the 25th or 26th.

Woody

nancy1652 Jul 8th, 2008 05:14 PM

I'll be in Paris from September 20th for six weeks...would love to join your GTG on either the 25th or 26th.

Nancy

travgina Jul 8th, 2008 07:49 PM

Wow, guys, this is so cool! Looks like we may have a nice size group.

Since mariebut doesn't arrive until the 25th, how about we try for lunch on the 26th as suggested by Jan? If that will work for everyone, all we have to do is pick a location. Anyone have a preference?

I'm still hoping to hear from ggnga, who I think is planning to join us. She's presently living in Paris and may have some ideas.

Gina

Woody Jul 9th, 2008 06:14 AM

Gina,

Lunch on Friday the 26th is fine with us.

Woody

tod Jul 9th, 2008 07:01 AM

Hi Gina!
Although I will not (Unfortunately!) be at your GTG - I do recommend lunch at Le Vin Sobre in the 5th! It may be a bit of a splurge @ around 25euros for two courses but the food and service is friendly and it is your typical French Bistro/Cafe` with the menu on a blackboard. Most unusual is they serve their OWN wine!
The area around there is lovely.

Even if you don't make it for the GTG do try and take your sister there - Also has a second restaurant/ branch - in the 7th.

tod Jul 9th, 2008 07:55 AM

PS - I've added more photos to my albums!

nancy1652 Jul 9th, 2008 11:46 AM

Friday the 26th for lunch is fine with me too and Le Vin Sobre in the 5th would be great since I'm living in the 5th. Tod, do you have the address?

Nancy

janyceh Jul 9th, 2008 02:16 PM

Gina-

Lunch 26 Sept is good for me.

Nancy--I found Le Vin Sobre in my Pudlo Paris. Address is 25, rue des Feuillantines.

Jan

Cathinjoetown Jul 9th, 2008 02:41 PM

I'm also relatively new to posting. What does GTG represent? I will be in Paris from the 20th-27th. I'd like to meet for lunch so please let me know what venue you choose. We leave the States on the 30 of July and are ending our trip just after the week in Paris. In fact, husband is leaving me in Paris with friends and credit cards, probably big mistake, so I will be with friends. Thanks!

Woody Jul 9th, 2008 08:59 PM

GTG = get together

Woody

tod Jul 10th, 2008 12:10 AM

Gina - there are two photos of Le Vin Sobre in this album:

http://tinyurl.com/3tfj28

This may help in the decision making.
There are so many good choices out there like Bistro du Peintre in the 11th ( should imagine it's open again) but perhaps someone here could confirm?
Gosh, I hope you all have a really fantastic GTG - I'm so g r e e n with envy!

travgina Jul 10th, 2008 05:47 AM

Hi all!

tod, I'm really getting excited about having such a big group wanting to meet! I'm going to look at the link you gave and also for info on the bistro in the 11th. (I'm also going to look at your new photos!)

Cathinjoetown, we'd love to have you join us - the more, the merrier! We just have to decide where. Tod has given us two possible locations; if anyone has a preference or somewhere else they'd like to suggest, please do so.

So far we have jan, mariebut, woody, nancy, cathinjoetown and me & sis. Looking good! :)

Robespierre Jul 10th, 2008 06:28 AM

Have you thought about cieldeparis.com? Their Menu des Gourmands is a terrific deal, and the view is unparalleled. The restaurant is about half the height of the Eiffel Tower above ground.

tod Jul 10th, 2008 07:08 AM

Robes - Any idea of the cost of Le Ciel's Menu des Gourmands? Just curious because the cheapest starter is 20E, first course cheapest 26E, Mains cheapest 26E, Cheese course 14E & desserts cheapie 13E! That is some serious money.

Travgina - Do go to the Le Vin Sobre website (sorry don't have it but it is easy to find on various searches) You get a menu & pictures of their dishes.

Le Bistro du Peintre, 116 Ave.,Ledru-Rollin, 11E.
Phone: 01-47-00-34-39
Metro: Voltaire / Ledru-Rollin

Cathinjoetown Jul 10th, 2008 09:43 AM

Very excited about meeting up with everyone. Would like to keep the cost mid-range at most but will go with the flow.

Cholmondley_Warner Jul 10th, 2008 09:53 AM

I can make this, if you'll have me. It's only a train trip for me.

Woody Jul 11th, 2008 07:11 AM

<< So far we have jan, mariebut, woody, nancy, cathinjoetown and me & sis. >>

Perhaps we should get an accurate headcount. (Examples: +DW for Dear Wife, and +DSis for Dear Sister.)

Also, it would be interesting to add our home towns.

I'll start.
Woody +DW (Los Angeles)

Looking forward to meeting everyone in Paris.

Woody

tod Jul 11th, 2008 08:07 AM

Colmondley_warner - Go for it!
Gina is a super lady and I might add that for a split second I had an incredible urge to make a second pilgrimage to Paris this year just to meet you ( I believe you are great fun to be with!) AND all the lovely Fodorites , especially Gina!

Cathinjoetown Jul 11th, 2008 08:20 AM

I will be on my own, Gadgetman unwisely leaving me with friends and credit cards in Paris while he goes back to UK to see kids. We are living in St. Joseph, MO at the moment with plans to move to SW France within the year.

Cholmondley_Warner Jul 11th, 2008 08:39 AM

I believe you are great fun to be with!>>>>>>

Well, there's "fun" and there's "FUN".

I tend to go in for the sort of fun that ends up in tattoo parlours at 3am with frowsy women and scary men.

In fact I may be one of those scary men.

(Actually I am reasonably house trained).

I can do this GTG dead easy. It is, as I said a hop and a skip for me.

Having said that, the pound is being as rogered by the Euro as the Dollar is. Paris is bloody expensive these days!

Cholmondley_Warner Jul 11th, 2008 08:41 AM

ps It will just be me.

Cathinjoetown Jul 11th, 2008 08:47 AM

Warner--Where do you live in UK? Our kids (I guess I should say "young people") are in Bournemouth and London (stuggling). Gadgetman grew up in Letchworth. Cath

Cholmondley_Warner Jul 11th, 2008 08:55 AM

I live in Blackheath in SE London - though probably not for much longer.

I'm from Winchester in Hampshire, but have been in London long enough to go native.

janyceh Jul 11th, 2008 09:45 AM

I will be on my own. Husband doing walking trip in Cornwall. Live in Santa Rosa-56 miles north of San Francisco.

Jan

travgina Jul 11th, 2008 10:27 AM

Warner, we'll be happy to have you join us, although I am NOT going to be talked into getting a tattoo at 3 a.m.!

tod, I wish you could make a second pilgrimage to be with us as well.

Woody, great idea about having everyone add their hometowns, and I was planning to ask for a head count since we'll probably need reservations for a large group.

Cath, I agree; I'd like to keep the cost mid-range too.

That being said, we're from Michigan, about 100 miles north of Detroit.

Gina

nancy1652 Jul 11th, 2008 05:09 PM

Hi all, I'll be on my own as DH has other plans. We're from Berkeley (CA).

Jan, thanks for the address of Le Vin Sobre; it reminded me to buy the Pudlos Paris...such a great book!

Tod, I thought your pictures were terrific. We stayed in Les Grands Ecoles several years ago and loved it too.

Nancy

Woody Jul 12th, 2008 12:44 AM

We too loved our stay at Hotel des Grandes Ecoles.

Speaking of hotels, anyone care to share where they're staying this time?

We are staying at the Renaissance Le Parc Trocadero (16th Arr., Metro Victor Hugo) using points.

The day before the GTG, we are going by train to Monet's Gardens in Giverny. Can anyone offer any advice, or care to join us?

Here's a recap of our info:

Warner, we'll be happy to have you join us, although I am NOT going to be talked into getting a tattoo at 3 a.m.!>>>>

Aha! A challenge! I like a challenge!

A screaming eagle holding lightning bolts in its feet* is always a good one.

*or whatever it is that eagles have at the ends of their legs.

As for hotel - I usually just wander about until I see one I like the look of.

tod Jul 12th, 2008 03:21 AM

No! No! Not an eagle & lightning bolts for Gina - just that barbed- wire thingy around her arm like Pammie!
Cholmondley - A bit further back on these posts you will see a "tinyurl" - on there is a photo of Hotel Pierre Nicole, 39 rue Pierre Nicole, 75005.
Ph: 01 43 54 76 86.
Single en-suite 85E.

We have got this lovely little place on our hotel list for next time - It's right near Port Royal metro stop.
